Watching the driver stammer more and more anxiously as he spoke, the surrounding passengers kept exchanging strange looks. A few of those seated nearby even moved farther away, worried that if the driver snapped again, he might take them hostage.
“Buddy, why don’t you start by explaining the head in your house?” Sun Desheng gave a strange smile and then said to the other passengers:
“Alright, for now it’s been preliminarily confirmed that you have no direct connection to this dismemberment case. At most, you were drugged or hypnotized and unknowingly helped dispose of the body. You can go home and rest for now, but until the case is officially closed, none of you are allowed to leave the city.
Also, this case has been classified as confidential. You’ll be given confidentiality agreements shortly. Only after reading and signing them can you leave.
Let me be clear—if any details of this case leak from anyone here in the future, it won’t just be a year or two in prison. And if you have psychological issues afterward, go see a therapist. Even regular officers would have a hard time handling this case…
Old Xiao, I’ll trouble you to escort them down.”
The passengers followed Xiao Yifeng off the bus and were taken into the building to sign confidentiality agreements.
Only the tearful bus driver remained, unsure of what to do. He didn’t dare move and kept desperately trying to explain to Sun Desheng:
“This really wasn’t me. When I opened the refrigerator and saw a human head, I was terrified too. I collapsed straight onto the floor. If you don’t believe me, send someone to my house—the tiles near the fridge are cracked where I fell…”
“Buddy, go back and think it over again. Think clearly about when you figured out how the killing and dismemberment happened. Then we’ll talk.”
Sun Desheng yawned and then said to Shen La:
“La Zi, take this guy back and lock him up. Don’t question him again until he remembers everything.”
The driver tried to argue further, but the white-haired man grabbed his arm. In an instant, all strength left his body, and he obediently followed Shen La off the bus and was taken back to the same holding room.
Watching the driver and passengers all leave, Che Qianzi finally spoke:
“Fatty, that’s your interrogation? That’s it? No tiger bench, no chili water? Who would tell the truth like that? If I were the mastermind, I’d just say I don’t remember—you can’t prove anything anyway. Besides, who’s stupid enough to dismember a body and then leave the head in their own fridge? Brothers Hao, what do you think—does that driver look like the mastermind?”
The Hao brothers simply smiled faintly and did not answer.
Sun Desheng glanced at the young Taoist with a grin:
“Brother, you still don’t understand what I’m trying to do. Based on my deduction, this bus dismemberment case isn’t something that ends with a few drawings. Someone must have been watching the scene. If anything went wrong, they could step in to fix it.
But whoever this person is, it can’t be the driver—because this person left the bus empty-handed.”
As he spoke, Sun Desheng walked to the rear of the bus and pulled open a hidden compartment in the floor. Inside was an empty, concealed storage space. Forensics had already examined it; a faint smell of disinfectant still lingered. This should have been where tools were kept—but no one knew where they had gone.
Sun Desheng measured the size of the compartment and said to Che Qianzi:
“This size fits a human head perfectly… If it were me, I’d hide myself among the passengers. When getting off the bus, I’d take a piece of the dismembered body with me and dump it somewhere.
Then, in the middle of the night when no one’s paying attention, I’d come back, retrieve the head, and deliver it to the driver’s refrigerator…”
At that moment, he noticed some of the passengers had already begun walking out of the bureau building. He smiled as he watched them and continued:
“Besides the driver, there were eighteen people. Seventeen of them were used as cover in front. Not an easy person to find…”
Realizing there had been a dismemberment case on the bus, the passengers left cautiously, avoiding the bus entirely. Seeing their unease, Hao Wenming said:
“Boss Sun, let’s assign people then. You’ve released eighteen suspects. That means each of us would have to watch three. That’s a bit much…”
“Chief Hao, who said we need to watch all eighteen?”
Sun Desheng chuckled and looked at the back of one departing passenger:
“We only need to watch this one.”
Shaken and uneasy, the accountant Li Hui left the bureau. Eager to get away, he signed the confidentiality agreement without even reading it and was the first to leave.
Originally, there was a bus stop outside the bureau, but thinking of what happened yesterday, Li Hui splurged and took a taxi home instead.
At home, his wife was frantic with worry. After her husband was taken away by the police, she had been terrified. She even went to the bureau to ask what happened, but no one explained anything to her.
Now seeing him return, she finally relaxed—but no matter how she questioned him, Li Hui stayed silent. He didn’t say why he was taken away.
Something felt wrong to her.
He was suddenly taken by the police and released without explanation?
No doubt about it—this must have been prostitution. He got caught with a woman, the woman exposed him, and after paying a fine he was released…
After imagining the scene, Mrs. Li felt a surge of rage. Without a word, she slapped her husband hard across the face.
“How shameless can you be! Normally you’re so stingy you won’t even spend a penny, and now you go out and spend it on prostitutes! Do you even respect me?”
The slap stunned Li Hui. When he came to his senses, all his suppressed anger exploded.
The usually submissive accountant snapped—he jumped up and started beating his wife violently.
Just as the two were beating each other bloody, the doorbell rang.
They both froze.
Li Hui wiped the blood from his face and angrily went to open the door. But the moment he did, all his anger vanished instantly.
Standing outside were the same outsiders from the bus at the bureau. The leading fat man smiled at him:
“Bad timing? Looks like you two were really going at it… even drew blood. I’ll say this though—at your age, don’t be so extreme. What if the kid comes back and sees this? Not good for the influence…”
Without waiting for an invitation, Sun Desheng walked straight into the house.
He looked at the injured woman and said:
“Sister-in-law? Don’t mind us. And don’t bother cooking—no need to set out eight dishes and eight bowls.”
Then he glanced around.
“Is this your bedroom? I’ll take a look.”
He pushed the door open and led the group inside.
Walking straight to the wardrobe, he drew his gun and pointed it at the cabinet door.
“Still hiding? Not going home and instead running around causing trouble?”
As soon as he finished speaking, Shen La suddenly stepped forward and yanked the cabinet open.
Inside was a teenage boy.
He looked like a middle school student—the second passenger who had answered earlier on the bus.
Inside the cabinet, he was still drawing a missing-head portrait…
