The call came from the police officer in charge of investigating Gao Yanlian’s case.

Not long before, while local police were handling another dismemberment case, they discovered a woman’s head. After identification, it was confirmed that the victim was Gao Yanlian—the same woman who had visited the prison earlier.

Before leaving, Xiao Yifeng had specifically instructed the local police to report any updates to him immediately.

According to the police, the dismemberment case had only just occurred.

Early that morning, an elderly man doing his morning exercise found a severed arm in a park flowerbed about four kilometers from Xiaobei Prison. Seeing such a thing at dawn terrified him, and he immediately called the police.

Not long after the local police arrived, another report came in—more body parts had been found. Strangely, the second scene was also inside the same park. The two disposal sites were even visible from each other with the naked eye.

The killer was clearly showing blatant disregard for the police—a direct provocation.

After forensic examination, it was preliminarily confirmed that the remains from both scenes belonged to the same victim.

Police checked park surveillance and found two housewives carrying black plastic bags separately walking through the park. They casually discarded the bags before leaving. The two had no interaction and seemed completely unrelated.

The police quickly arrested both women.

But the two appeared completely unaware of what had happened. No matter how they were questioned, they looked confused and disoriented.

An experienced homicide investigator reviewed their statements and, seeing their resistance, simply showed them surveillance footage of them throwing away the black bags.

Even then, they denied doing it. It was as if they had completely lost that portion of their memory.

So the investigators escalated further.

They showed them footage from the crime scene itself—black bags being opened, revealing dismembered human remains.

The result shocked everyone.

Both women were terrified beyond words. One fainted and had to be taken to the hospital. The other wet herself on the spot.

They did not look like they were pretending.

At that point, the police realized something was seriously wrong.

Then, more body parts were found in a trash bin one kilometer away from the park.

While they were rushing to that scene, a fourth dismemberment report came in—

This time, the caller was a bus driver.

After finishing his morning shift and returning home, he discovered a human head frozen inside his refrigerator.

Terrified, he immediately called the police.

When officers arrived, they confirmed that the head belonged to Gao Yanlian.

Following this lead, investigators quickly discovered that the suspects in the other disposal cases were all passengers who had been on the same bus ride as Gao Yanlian on the day she went missing.

Surveillance inside the bus was used to identify the passengers. It was found that every passenger who got off was carrying a black plastic bag of considerable size.

They were now inspecting the bus itself, but a final conclusion would take time.

After hanging up, Xiao Yifeng took a deep breath and said to the others on the vehicle:

“It really was just as Yang Xiao said. Everyone on that bus was manipulated. After they were affected, they dismembered Gao Yanlian’s body themselves.”

“Originally, the person behind this likely intended to keep the head intact. But because I narrowly escaped death, he realized the curse painting would eventually be discovered. So he withdrew the technique and prepared to flee. By now, he’s probably already gone—trying to erase all remaining traces of Gao Yanlian before we catch up.”

Sun Desheng smiled faintly.

“This guy’s got some brains. But he has a fatal flaw—his net is too big. Eventually, there will be a hole in it. Not to brag, but even I wouldn’t dare cast such a wide net. One weak link and it all falls apart. Sooner or later, something will go wrong.”

“Boss,” Hao Zhengyi said, “so you’ve got a way to catch the mastermind?”

“This guy’s no ordinary expert. Don’t underestimate him just because you think you’re smart. Be careful not to overturn in a ditch. Once was enough for that airport incident.”

Hearing this reminder, Sun Desheng sighed.

“Don’t worry. Once is more than enough.”

“Besides, I’m not even in the bureau anymore. The only reason I’m involved is because he targeted my brother Che Qianzi and almost killed Old Xiao. That alone can’t be let go.”

“If it were just Old Ren’s case, I’d already be sitting at home drinking tea and watching the show.”

By then, the van had arrived at the local police bureau.

A bus was parked in the courtyard, and several forensic experts in white coats were examining the vehicle.

The officer in charge of the case came out to greet them.

Seeing the group arrive, he hurried forward and said to Xiao Yifeng:

“My people are already deployed. Another dismemberment case was just discovered. All the victims are passengers who got off this bus…”

“Sir, I’ve been in this job for almost twenty years, and I’ve never seen anything this bizarre. If you’re taking over, the case files are ready. We can hand everything over immediately.”

It was clear the officer was shaken. The case had gone far beyond his understanding, and even in broad daylight he felt a chill. He clearly wanted to pass this hot potato to someone else as quickly as possible.

Xiao Yifeng looked at him, then pointed to Sun Desheng.

“This is my superior, Director Sun Desheng. You can report the latest developments to him.”

The officer was startled by the title and quickly saluted.

“I didn’t realize Director Sun was here. I’ll report to the bureau leadership immediately…”

He stopped mid-sentence, unsure how to properly address Sun Desheng.

Sun Desheng chuckled.

“Titles don’t matter. We’re all serving the people. You handle the investigation—this case still belongs to your department. We’re only assisting.”

“But because of its severity, it must be placed under confidentiality. Apart from your task force, no one else—including your superiors—may be informed. Understood?”

“Yes, understood!”

The officer saluted again and immediately called his subordinates one by one to enforce confidentiality.

At that moment, a forensic technician stepped down from the bus.

Sun Desheng walked over and asked what had been found.

The technician, realizing he was no ordinary person, pointed to the bus.

“We found traces of cleaned blood inside the vehicle. As for blood type and whether it’s linked to the dismemberment case, we still need lab testing.”

Sun Desheng nodded.

“Did you check the graffiti on the rear seats?”

The technician froze.

“Graffiti? We inspected all the seats—there was no drawing or writing.”

At that moment, Xiao Yifeng climbed onto the rear of the bus, leaned in to look at the back seats, and shook his head.

“It’s been wiped clean…”
