The person Sun Desheng contacted turned out to be quite reliable. Shortly after, the man named Old Zheng called back.

After a brief exchange on the phone, Sun Fatty hung up and said to Shen La and Che Qianzi, “I’ve got it. A serious traffic accident just happened at the expressway entrance heading back to Beijing. Six vehicles were involved in a chain collision. Two people died on the spot. The scene is still chaotic, and the casualty count will likely rise…”

While speaking, he had already picked up his coat.

Seeing this, Shao Yiyi frowned. “You were just discharged—where are you going now?”

Sun Fatty gave a bitter smile. “Old Xiao from the Fifth Division might be in trouble. Looks like it’s bad… I need to go check. I’ll try to be back before dinner. Old Tu, I’m counting on you to look after the house…”

Hearing that it was about Old Xiao, Shao Yiyi’s expression softened slightly. She sighed.

“Then be careful. You two keep an eye on him for me. Honestly, I don’t know whether he’s clever or foolish…”

After comforting his wife and child a few words, Sun Desheng left the house with Shen La and Che Qianzi. They got into the car, and Shen La drove toward the accident site at high speed.

Once the car was moving, Sun Desheng became unusually unsettled. He kept calling Xiao Yifeng, but every call showed no answer.

He then called Old Zheng again.

“Same thing as before—has the victim’s identity been confirmed? Is there anyone named Xiao Yifeng?”

The car was silent, and the voice on the other end was clearly audible.

“The death toll has risen to six. There was a vehicle explosion at the scene, and two bodies are severely burned beyond recognition. We’ll need facial reconstruction for identification. Hey Fatty, tell me the truth—this crash wasn’t caused by you, was it? Did you see someone die and now want me to clean up your mess?”

“Get lost! One of my subordinates at the Municipal Investigation Bureau might be in there. I’m just checking!” Sun Desheng snapped. “We’re on our way to the scene—tell the officers there not to give me trouble. Hey… Old Zheng… Brother Zheng…”

But the call was already hung up.

Che Qianzi suddenly spoke up. “Fatty, we’ve only known each other for a short time, but this is the first time I’ve seen you like this… I have to ask—why are you so concerned about Xiao Yifeng? Something’s off. Your relationship doesn’t seem that close. You shouldn’t be this anxious.”

Before Sun Desheng could answer, his phone rang again.

It was Old Zheng.

“Just got another update from the scene commander. Fatty, you need to prepare yourself. A body at the crash site had Xiao Yifeng’s ID on it. He was thrown from the vehicle. When they found him, it was already too late. Come over first—call me if you need anything.”

Hearing the news of Xiao Yifeng’s death, Sun Desheng froze.

He stared blankly out the window for a long time before finally speaking to Che Qianzi.

“Old Xiao was my informant inside the bureau…”

Seeing that both men were his trusted brothers—and now that Xiao Yifeng’s death had been confirmed—Sun Fatty decided there was no point hiding it anymore. He took a deep breath and continued.

“When I rebuilt the Municipal Investigation Bureau, I needed an ‘eye and ear’ inside. Everyone knew Shen La and I were inseparable, so he wasn’t suitable. After going through everyone, only Old Xiao—Xiao Yifeng—fit.”

“He was recruited during Old Gao’s time. My relationship with him was ordinary, and besides the Sixth Division, he had worked in every other division. He was well-connected and knew the system inside out. He was perfect for the role.”

He lit a cigarette and continued.

“Later, when I went to America on business, everything happening inside the bureau was reported to me by him.”

“And there was more. A bigger discovery.”

Sun Desheng hesitated for a moment, then continued since the person was already dead.

“Guangren and Huoshan also found him. They used his master to threaten him and forced him to act as their informant.”

“They probably chose him because he was deputy director of the Fifth Division—he had access to almost everything immediately.”

“But Old Xiao knew where his loyalties lay. That very night, he came to find me and told me everything about Guangren.”

“That’s why I never really interfered with him. You understand now? Guangren and Huoshan were trying to get intelligence from the bureau, but they didn’t expect that I was also using Old Xiao to monitor them.”

Sun Desheng sighed and flicked away his cigarette.

“Pity… he died too early. If this hadn’t happened, maybe a few years later when I got tired of the bureau, I would’ve handed the chief position to him and taken my wife and kid to travel the world…”

Even Shen La, who was as close to Sun Desheng as if they wore the same pants, had no idea there was an informant inside the bureau. If he hadn’t just learned of Xiao Yifeng’s death, Sun Desheng would likely never have mentioned it.

Che Qianzi, however, seemed indifferent—until what came next made him uneasy.

Sun Desheng glanced at him.

“Brother, last night you didn’t have a nightmare. Someone used ghosts to impersonate your master Kong Dalong and cast a curse on you to assassinate Old Ren…”

“Their target was Old Ren, but he had already hidden inside the bureau and couldn’t be touched. So they took a sideways approach and targeted you instead. Luckily, Old Xiao—who came to ask me about something—intervened and saved you. That’s probably also why he was killed.”

Hearing this, Che Qianzi immediately widened his eyes.

“Fatty… so my old man is fine? He’s not in trouble, right? You’re not hiding anything from me?”

“Relax,” Sun Desheng said. “Even if I were in trouble, that old slippery bastard… nothing will happen to him.”

At that moment, his phone rang again.

An unknown number.

After a brief hesitation, he answered.

But what came through made everyone freeze.

It was Xiao Yifeng’s voice.

“Boss, someone just tried to hit me with a truck. I jumped out in time, luckily. My phone was still in the car so I couldn’t take it. I found another phone to call you so you wouldn’t worry. I’m sure this was the same person behind the hospital and prison incidents…”

“Hello? Boss? Are you still listening?”

Confirming that Xiao Yifeng was alive, Sun Desheng told him to find a place to hide and wait for them.

He then called Old Zheng again, only to finally confirm the truth—the dead man was Xiao Yifeng, but the identity records had confused “Xiao Yifeng” with “Xiao Yifeng” (same pronunciation, different characters).

After hanging up, Sun Desheng gave an awkward laugh and said, “About Old Xiao’s situation… I never told anyone else. So… just pretend you didn’t hear it.”

Before he could finish, Shao Yiyi’s call came through.

He answered, and her voice came from the other end.

“Fatty, if anything really happens to Old Xiao, you must find a way to bring his master out. He sincerely worked as your eyes and ears—you can’t let him die with regrets…”
