Bureau of Paranormal Investigation: The Final Chapter 6 min read 144 of 172 3

Tu An, who appeared clean and refined, had also been sent over by Wu Rendi. He himself didn’t even know what had happened. In the early hours of the morning, he received a call from Director Wu, after which he packed his luggage, set fire to his own house, and came straight to Sun Desheng’s place.

Fortunately, Tu An lived alone in a small courtyard house, so burning it down did not cause any casualties.

After meeting Sun Desheng, Tu An pulled him aside with a somewhat absent-minded expression. After hearing the explanation, he said in surprise, “Someone actually dared to target your wife? Why not call the Er Yang back? I’ll go myself and see who’s got the nerve to risk their life like that.”

“Old Tu, you don’t need to handle this,” Sun Desheng said with a grin. “Stay at the bureau for now. Not to say anything unnecessary, but something big might happen at the Municipal Investigation Bureau in the next day or two. Director Wu and the Er Yang aren’t here, La Zi has to stay with me, so you’re the only one holding the fort.”

“I’ll listen to Wu Rendi,” Tu An replied without hesitation. Then he added, “Tell me, between the bureau and Shao Yiyi, which one do you think Wu Rendi values more? From my point of view, the bureau isn’t even worth one finger of your wife. Sun Desheng, you really married well.”

“My wife is indeed a good wife,” Sun Desheng said, glancing back at her. “But you also know how big my house is. With our three brothers, plus my wife and kid, there really isn’t space for you. Old Tu, La Zi is here watching things—nothing major will happen.”

“Don’t make things difficult for me with Wu Rendi’s orders,” Tu An sighed lightly. After thinking for a moment, he continued, “How about this—you don’t worry about me. I’ll figure something out myself. I’ll hold out until Wu Rendi returns.”

The two were about to say more when Shao Yiyi interrupted them, urging Sun Desheng to leave the hospital quickly.

What surprised Sun Desheng was that Tu An had actually managed to rent a place directly under his building. By the time they returned home by car, a real estate agent was already waiting for him to view the apartment.

Tu An didn’t even bother looking around. Once he learned the unit was directly below Sun Desheng, he immediately signed the lease. By the time he finished, Sun Desheng and the others had already entered the house.

“Home really is the best…” Once back, Sun Desheng slouched comfortably on the sofa and said with a grin to Che Qianzi, “Brother, last time doesn’t count. From today on, you’re officially part of the family. I’ll call Huang Ran and the others later—our whole family will find a seafood restaurant and properly celebrate your joining feast.”

“We’re already home—why go out to eat?” Shao Yiyi said while coaxing the child. “Xiao Wu, go get mommy’s apron.”

She continued, “I woke up early this morning and spent the whole day preparing. I’ve made a proper feast for our brother. But let me say this first—you’ve just been discharged, so you can’t drink too much. One bottle of liquor is the limit.”

While speaking, she had already gone into the kitchen. Lifting the lid of the electric soup pot, a rich aroma of fish head soup spread through the room.

After just one whiff, the expressions of the three Sun brothers turned strange.

“This is a proper big fish head I had the fish vendor reserve for me—authentic Thousand-Island Lake silver carp,” Shao Yiyi said with an intoxicated expression as she inhaled the aroma herself.

Che Qianzi couldn’t help but ask, “Sister-in-law, don’t you ever taste it while cooking to check the salt?”

“No need,” she replied. “This soup was taught to me by an expert. Healthy soups aren’t supposed to have salt.”

While speaking, she began preparing other dishes. Then she added to Che Qianzi, “Fatty said you haven’t eaten properly, so I’ll first make you some zhajiang noodles to fill your stomach. Later tonight, you can properly taste my cooking.”

Che Qianzi agreed and then walked over to Sun Desheng and Shen La, lowering his voice. “Why don’t we skip Huang Ran? Fatty, just find an excuse and the three of us go out instead. I’ll treat dinner tonight…”

Sun Desheng chuckled but before he could respond, his phone rang.

He glanced at the caller ID and picked up.

“Old Xiao? Still at Xiaobei Prison?”

“…Out already?”

“You say that again? Something abnormal was found in the surveillance footage?”

“Before the incident, someone visited the informant, and he already seemed a bit off at that time?”

“The footage has been sent to the bureau? Alright, send a copy to me as well. And also to Yang Xiao so he can take a look.”

“…Anything else? Mm-hmm, mm-hmm…”

After a moment, Sun Desheng received a video file.

He opened it in front of Shen La and Che Qianzi.

Inside the Xiaobei Prison visitation room, a middle-aged woman was seated outside the bulletproof glass. Soon after, a male prisoner in uniform approached and sat down on the opposite side.

Because the video had no audio, they couldn’t hear the conversation. At first, the man seemed confused and even pointed at himself, as if thinking the woman had mistaken him for someone else. But after a few exchanged words, he suddenly became cheerful and relaxed.

At around the 5-minute-15-second mark, the woman raised her hand to cover her mouth and appeared to whisper something.

The man suddenly shuddered.

Then he collapsed to the ground and began convulsing.

Guards rushed in immediately, thinking he was having a seizure. One of them stuffed something into his mouth to prevent him from biting his tongue.

Then, suddenly, the man regained clarity, stood up shakily with assistance, and was escorted away by two inmates.

The video ended there.

Sun Desheng said, “According to prison records, the woman claimed to be the prisoner’s sister. Her identity documents also match that claim. But from the footage, the prisoner clearly didn’t recognize her.”

“The change in his condition happened right after she covered her mouth and spoke. Later, during transport, he suddenly went berserk and tried to escape. He was ultimately killed after being shot eleven times.”

After a pause, Sun Desheng continued, “It’s been confirmed—the woman is not actually his sister. She only resembles her closely and managed to fool the prison guards during identity checks.”

“However, after leaving the prison, she completely disappeared. Surveillance outside shows her boarding a bus, but none of the bus stop cameras recorded her getting off anywhere along the route.”
