From the residential building across the way, after seeing the members of the Investigation Bureau rush into the building, Ren Rong began to feel nervous.
Unfortunately, there were too few people on his side to take such a risk. Moreover, the surveillance cameras inside the building had already been cut off by the people inside—there was no way to know what was happening.
When he heard the explosion from above, Ren Rong said:
“I’m not waiting anymore. I’m calling the police from my old unit immediately. These people are dead, that’s one thing—but we cannot let innocent civilians get hurt. They’ve even used explosives. What else wouldn’t they dare to do? This is lawless!”
As he spoke, he was about to call the nearby police department for backup, but Xiao Yifeng stopped him again.
“Leader Ren, one explosion doesn’t prove anything. Gas explosions happen all the time. Besides, those people in the Investigation Bureau aren’t stupid. If they really harm civilians, they’ll be removed from the blacklist immediately. Before acting, they’ll definitely evacuate the surrounding population for us—or they’ll have already taken over floors seven to nine in advance. Back in Chief Gao Liang’s time, there was already a rule: police and armed police can only clean up afterward, not get involved during the incident.”
“So that era is over now. The head of the Investigation Bureau is now Ren,” Ren Rong said as he pushed Xiao Yifeng aside and prepared to call his old subordinates.
Since he couldn’t command the Investigation Bureau’s own people—because they all belonged to Sun Desheng’s faction—then he would call the people he could command.
Xiao Yifeng wanted to stop him again, but his own director shook his head. Helpless, he stepped aside.
Just as Ren Rong took out his phone, Director He Wenying’s phone rang first.
He glanced at the caller ID, answered, and said:
“Boss? Didn’t I tell you to come back quickly—what? What do you mean you couldn’t stop them? Just talk to the chief yourself…”
He switched on speaker mode and handed the phone to Ren Rong.
“My brother’s call. You should listen yourself.”
A bad feeling rose in Ren Rong’s heart. He took the phone.
Before he could even greet him politely, he already heard He Zhengyi’s urgent voice:
“Chief Ren, something’s wrong on our side. Five minutes ago, all the people we had persuaded to leave have turned back and are heading toward your location. We’ve changed strategy—Section Two is intercepting them. Sections Three and Four are rushing to the Yong’an Building to join you. There may be casualties later. Be prepared.”
After hanging up, Ren Rong’s unease deepened.
A full-scale battle involving these cultivators… in the capital… If this got out of control, his first day as chief of the Investigation Bureau might also be his last. If he called in his old subordinates, things might only get worse—within hours, videos of “police battling flying Taoists” could be all over the internet.
After thinking it over, he asked the two directors, He Wenying and Ouyang Pianzuo:
“Then… when Chief Gao and Chief Sun encountered situations like this before, how did they handle it?”
He expected a serious suggestion.
Instead, He Wenying immediately said something that nearly made things worse:
“Them? The only time was when a group of Daoists stormed the bureau… Chief Gao died together with them in that incident. Chief Ren, my brother is right—you need to prepare early.”
Seeing Ren Rong’s face turning pale, He Wenying finally got to the point:
“I suggest we mobilize nearby police units now. Use a gas leak at Yong’an Building as the reason to evacuate civilians. Then set up a two-kilometer cordon, but leave an opening so both returning blacklisted individuals and our own Investigation Bureau personnel can enter.”
Ren Rong had no better option, so he agreed.
Soon, with an officer assisting him, He Wenying, Ouyang Pianzuo, and others left the residential building and began evacuating civilians using police credentials.
Fortunately, the earlier explosion had already alarmed the area. When told it might be a gas leak with explosion risk, most residents quickly left.
Meanwhile, suspicious individuals were already starting to enter Yong’an Building.
Originally, the investigators wanted to stop them, but He Wenying said:
“From now on, don’t block them. Let them in. It’s better to fight inside than be seen outside.”
Thus, people kept streaming into the building.
After more than an hour, most civilians had been evacuated, and over a hundred blacklisted individuals had entered the building. But inside, there was complete silence—no further sounds of fighting.
Soon after, more Investigation Bureau directors arrived and were discussing plans when Ren Rong finally came out of the residential building.
He walked straight to them and said:
“The higher-ups have issued instructions. The scope of this incident is too large—it must be resolved quickly. Within one hour, it must be finished.”
Hearing this time limit, all the directors’ expressions turned grim.
Before they could respond, Section Two’s Xiong Wanyi spoke first:
“Director Ouyang, get our chief a machine gun. He doesn’t need an hour—ten minutes and he’ll wipe everyone out.”
Ren Rong’s face turned red and white with anger, humiliated in front of everyone.
Before he could erupt, a bus arrived.
Thirty to forty armed officers stepped out—police in appearance, but all were actually his old subordinates.
Seeing their former leader, they immediately gathered around him.
Only then did Ren Rong finally feel reassured.
After exchanging greetings, he got straight to the point:
“Good, you’re here. As you’ve been told, there are 226 suspects inside the building right now. We only have 32 people. Do you dare go in?”
“Dare!”
They answered in unison.
Ren Rong’s confidence returned.
“These people inside are extremely dangerous. In any situation, if they show intent to harm others, you are authorized to use any force necessary. I will take full responsibility. Your priority is your own safety.”
After finishing, he waved his hand.
“Move in!”
The old subordinates immediately rushed toward the building.
The directors tried to stop them, but Ren Rong shoved them aside.
“If you don’t dare take responsibility, someone else will! If you’re afraid, just stand here and watch how others do your job!”
Then he picked up the walkie-talkie.
“Report the situation inside. Old He, how is it in there?”
Silence.
Dead silence on the other end.
