After wiping his mouth, Deputy Director Xiao briefly repeated what he had already told Sun Desheng over the phone. Just as he was about to continue, Shen La interrupted him.
“Hold on. There’s something I don’t understand. Old Xiao, how did you know about this Hou San?”
“Hou San’s real name is Hou Diankun. I found his name in Sun Biyun’s notes.”
As he spoke, Xiao Yifeng took out several photocopied pages. They recorded how Sun Biyun had met Hou Diankun and how Hou San had later bribed him into setting up a trap for Long Dekou.
Apparently, Sun Biyun hadn’t completely trusted Hou San either. Fearing that he might be silenced afterward, he had made preparations in advance.
“La Zi, stop interrupting. Seriously…”
After glancing through the documents, Sun Desheng grinned and said to Xiao Yifeng:
“Continue, Old Xiao. You didn’t explain clearly over the phone. Have you found the whereabouts of that Long Dekou fellow?”
“Not yet.”
Xiao Yifeng smiled bitterly.
“After you left the scene today, several strange people showed up. When they heard that someone had died with his abdomen split open, their expressions became very strange. I wanted to stop them, but I was a step too late. I watched them disappear right before my eyes. I mean literally disappear.”
“So more people came to join the fun. Looks like Volcano wasn’t just waiting for us.”
Sun Desheng smiled and continued:
“Old Xiao, can you remember their faces? Your Fifth Division specializes in this sort of thing. Draw up some portraits when you get back.”
“That’s easy. But I have something even more important to tell you.”
At this point, Xiao Yifeng put away his smile.
“I think I may have encountered Guangren.
On the way back, someone suddenly appeared in my back seat. He used some kind of spell to obscure his features. All I could see in the rearview mirror was a face hidden in swirling mist…
My mind became completely muddled. It seemed like he asked me something, but I have no idea how I answered.”
The moment Guangren’s name was mentioned, the expressions of both Sun Desheng and Shen La darkened. Only Che Qianzi remained clueless.
After exchanging glances with Shen La, Fatty Sun said:
“Old Xiao, are you sure it was Guangren? Seriously, you said yourself that all you saw was a misty face. How can you be certain it was the Great Fangshi?”
“White hair. Aside from the few people in the Bureau, I can’t think of anyone else who’d need to hide their appearance.”
Xiao Yifeng had clearly anticipated the question.
“We saw Volcano in the morning, and by evening I may have encountered Guangren. Dasheng, is this case connected to something huge? Take my advice—contact Director Wu immediately.”
“That won’t be necessary.”
Sun Desheng turned toward Shen La and smiled.
“If we go by seniority, you’d still have to call Great Fangshi Guangren your master, wouldn’t you, La Zi? Why don’t you do us a favor and ask your teacher about this?”
“I’m not walking into that kind of trouble.”
Shen La shook his head.
“Guangren and Director Wu have been fighting for years. I don’t want to get caught between them again. Old Xiao, you continue talking. I’ll look up some overseas flights.”
Knowing that Shen La was joking, Xiao Yifeng laughed along.
“I can’t say with absolute certainty that it was Guangren. But even if it wasn’t, Volcano has already appeared today, so you’d better be careful. No matter what happens, it’s always good to be prepared. And take my advice too—come back to the Bureau. At least you’ll have something to rely on.”
Sun Desheng smiled.
“The first part makes sense. Whether it was Guangren or not, this matter isn’t small.
We’re all friends here, so I won’t hide it from you.
After returning this afternoon, I called Old Gui Bugui overseas and asked him to help investigate.
You might as well stay. We should get some information soon.
Honestly, you’ve been involved in this case from the start. I’m no longer with the Bureau, and La Zi doesn’t have as much authority as you do.
If anything comes up, we’ll have to rely on you to investigate and handle it.”
This was exactly what Xiao Yifeng had been waiting for.
Had he proposed it himself, Fatty Sun might have become suspicious. It wouldn’t have been nearly as effective.
Just as Deputy Director Xiao was preparing to exchange a few polite remarks, Sun Desheng’s phone rang again.
Glancing at the caller ID, he answered cheerfully:
“Third Uncle, you got news already?
Yes, Director Wu just left…
He was even talking about you while we were eating.
Honestly, how could I possibly lie to you?
Right, right, right…
Got it. I understand now.
But can you find out who that person originally sent over was?
Three people were sent?”
After speaking for a few moments, Sun Desheng hung up and turned toward the others.
“According to Gui Bugui, it’s pretty much what I suspected.
‘Long Dekou’ is the person who was originally sent to hunt down people like Hou San.
But nobody knows why he suddenly stopped twenty years ago.
Now those people who were hunted back then have banded together and are preparing to hunt Long Dekou in return.”
Just as Sun Desheng was speaking, someone knocked on the private room’s door.
A moment later, the door opened and a waiter in his thirties entered.
After glancing around the room, he smiled and asked:
“Bosses, would you like to order anything else? Sorry, but our chefs get off work at ten-thirty. If you’d like anything more, now’s the time.”
Seeing that Xiao Yifeng had finished eating, Sun Desheng smiled.
“It’s getting late anyway. Bring the bill. Old Xiao, you can claim reimbursement, so this meal’s on you. Next time when Old Huang treats us, I’ll bring you along and call it even…”
Before he could finish, an explosive crash suddenly sounded behind Che Qianzi.
At the same instant, the wall behind him collapsed.
Two steel hooks attached to cables shot out from the rubble like lightning and clamped onto the young Taoist’s shoulders.
Then they violently yanked him backward through the opening.
The moment the wall collapsed, Shen La reacted.
He reached out to grab Che Qianzi, and at the same time, the smiling waiter suddenly flicked two burning talismans out from his sleeves.
The flaming papers flew straight toward the white-haired man.
By then, Shen La had already caught hold of Che Qianzi.
He was just about to activate his twin swords to sever the steel cables when, from the corner of his eye, he saw the two talismans flying toward him.
Yet the white-haired man endured the attack head-on.
Allowing the talismans to strike his body, he firmly pulled Che Qianzi back to safety.
By now, Sun Desheng had also reacted.
He hurriedly drew his pistol and aimed at the “waiter.”
Without so much as a warning, he immediately fired at the man’s vital points.
In his haste, however, his aim was off.
The bullet struck the waiter’s shoulder.
Realizing the plan had failed and that he had been wounded, the man had no desire to stay. Covering the injury with one hand and gritting his teeth, he turned and fled toward the door.
Just as Sun Desheng shifted his gun to finish him off, the wall behind them exploded and collapsed for a second time.
Three or five men dressed in black rushed in through the opening.
One of them threw a flying knife directly at Sun Desheng.
Seeing that Fatty Sun had no time to dodge, Shen La shouted.
Two rays of cold light instantly flew out from behind his waist.
In a flash, the flying knife was cut cleanly in half.
At that moment, Xiao Yifeng moved like lightning and appeared in front of everyone.
Opening his mouth, he blew out a breath.
The exhalation transformed into a powerful gust that became a shockwave, sending the black-clothed men flying backward.
