Zhao Qing still did not stay overnight at Sun Desheng’s house. Although it was already the middle of the night, she still had Shen La accompany her home. As the two of them were leaving, Fatty Sun was still complaining on Shen La’s behalf. He said to Che Qianzi:
“I’m really saying this, brother, what’s wrong with her? What era are we living in? Why be so old-fashioned? What’s wrong with staying the night here? La Zi’s here too. If the two of them get carried away and do that, and if La Zi works hard enough, in a couple of months they’ll be getting married because of the baby…”
Hearing Sun Desheng’s nonsense, Che Qianzi laughed and said:
“There you go again… Fatty Sun, did you also visit that woman Li Guangquan was looking for?”
“That woman? What woman?”
Shao Yiyi had just finished cleaning up and overheard the conversation. She walked over and asked.
“Don’t listen to my brother’s nonsense. It’s nothing, nothing…” Sun Desheng chuckled awkwardly and quickly changed the subject.
“Let’s get some sleep. We have to get up early tomorrow and head to Tianjin.”
Shao Yiyi frowned.
“Didn’t you say you were quitting? Xiao Wu and I are still waiting to travel around the world with you. But now it looks like… that’s hanging by a thread.”
“Your man got set up yesterday. Sigh, I’ve always been the one scheming against others. This time I got slapped left and right and couldn’t even fight back…”
Holding his wife’s hand, Sun Desheng sighed repeatedly and continued:
“I used to think your husband was the best schemer in the world, but yesterday I finally understood what it means when there’s always someone better. If I can calculate five moves ahead, then that bastard can calculate at least seven. It felt like every step I took had already been anticipated by him…
Ever since I started scheming to steal snacks from my deskmate in first grade, I’ve never suffered such a complete defeat. That feeling of frustration was like standing in the snow in the dead of winter and being drenched from head to toe with ice-cold water full of slush…”
“It was only one loss. Are you really going to act like such a crybaby over it?”
Shao Yiyi shook off her husband’s hand and continued:
“How about you hug me and cry in front of your brother? Even our daughter Xiao Wu is stronger than you. She knows that if she’s bullied in kindergarten, she should bully them back. How are you not embarrassed saying this to me?
I thought you had finally grown a conscience and were resigning to take the two of us traveling. Turns out you just got bullied outside and got so scared you don’t even dare leave the house anymore.”
Che Qianzi was dumbfounded.
He never expected his sister-in-law to have such a side. Looking at the scene, the gentle and delicate Shao Yiyi seemed more like the man of the family.
Seeing that things needed smoothing over, Che Qianzi coughed and said:
“Sister-in-law, for my sake, stop talking or Fatty Sun’s really going to cry…
But seriously, yesterday was dangerous. Without Fatty Sun, Shen La and I might not have made it back alive. Still, there’s one thing I don’t understand. If we investigate that Sun Biyun in Tianjin tomorrow, will we really be able to catch the mastermind at the airport? Someone who plans that deeply wouldn’t leave any evidence behind, right? Or do you really think my old man has connections too?”
“Brother, you still don’t understand. What I’m investigating isn’t Sun Biyun, and it isn’t your master Kong Dalong either.”
At this point, Sun Desheng yawned and continued sleepily:
“Enough for now. Once we get to Tianjin tomorrow, we might find something big…”
Early the next morning, while Che Qianzi was still asleep, Sun Desheng dragged him out of bed.
Not wanting to wake the still-sleeping Shao Yiyi, the two men left the house yawning. Downstairs, they found Shen La already waiting inside a business van.
Alongside Shen La was Xiao Yifeng from the Fifth Division.
Seeing Sun Desheng, Deputy Director Xiao smiled and said:
“Shen La mentioned that you were going to the Tianjin crime scene. Coincidentally, I managed to get this case transferred to me. Let’s go together. It’ll give me a chance to learn from you all.”
“Old Xiao, you’re being too formal. We can learn from each other.”
Sun Desheng wasn’t surprised by Xiao Yifeng’s appearance. Grinning, he continued:
“Old Xiao, let me ask you something. How many cases like this—these hollow corpses—have happened over the past few months?”
Xiao Yifeng was like a walking encyclopedia. Without consulting any records, he answered immediately:
“Three reported cases. One in Liaoning, one in Beijing, and now this one in Tianjin.
But the Liaoning corpse had decomposed too badly to be of any value. The recent cases are the hollow corpse resulting from the Beijing brawl, and the even stranger one from last night.”
Hearing their conversation, Che Qianzi became a little more alert and interjected:
“The case from last night—won’t important clues already have disappeared by the time we get there? I don’t know much about this, I’m just asking…”
“That’s procedure.”
Xiao Yifeng smiled at Sun Desheng and explained:
“Cases that haven’t been officially reported to the Bureau don’t fall under our investigators’ jurisdiction immediately. Director Sun originally had the authority, but now that you’ve resigned…
And Secretary Yang reportedly got drunk and fell down the stairs last night, breaking his nose and several ribs. He’s still in the hospital.
I had no choice but to use an old friend’s connections and request a joint investigation between our departments.”
“Old Xiao, enough with the useless talk.”
Leaning back in his seat, Sun Desheng said:
“I’m just going there to take a look. Recently I’ve developed a new problem—I can’t sleep at night unless I see a dead body.”
With that, he lay back.
“I didn’t sleep well last night. Wake me when we arrive.”
Not long after Sun Desheng fell asleep, Che Qianzi closed his eyes as well.
Only Shen La and Xiao Yifeng chatted intermittently about the case. At first, he could still hear parts of their conversation, but before long he drifted off completely.
Who knew how long had passed before Sun Desheng woke him up.
“We’re here, brother. Get out and get some fresh air.”
Still groggy, Che Qianzi opened his eyes and saw rows of low houses outside the window.
Seven or eight police cars were parked nearby. Police tape surrounded one house, while curious residents crowded outside, enthusiastically offering their own theories to help solve the case.
“I told you that guy living in that house wasn’t a good person! Guess what? Last night he brought back seven or eight women. Then some lunatic showed up with an axe in one hand and a chainsaw in the other and chopped everybody up…”
“Oh, cut it out, Second Aunt! My younger son was the one who called the police. Last night the third son of the Sun family left the front door open. My boy thought thieves had broken in. He shouted for ages and nobody answered, so he went inside…
And guess what? There was a dead person lying in the house. There was even a child inside. One corpse, two lives…”
Sun Desheng was listening with great interest when Xiao Yifeng called out his friend from the local police bureau.
Coincidentally, the man was the captain of the criminal investigation team responsible for the case.
Hearing that Xiao Yifeng had even invited the former Director of the Bureau, Sun Desheng, he hurried out to greet them.
After exchanging a few polite words, Xiao’s friend led them inside and said:
“We received the report around dawn. When I arrived and saw the scene, I was stunned, so I immediately contacted Old Xiao for help. Then I heard Director Sun was also paying attention to similar cases, so I boldly invited you and the other experts over.”
The man was very tactful.
Although Sun Desheng had actually come uninvited, he made it sound as though he had personally invited them.
As they spoke, the group entered the house.
The bodies had not yet been removed; they had been left in place specifically for Sun Desheng and the others.
Although Che Qianzi had mentally prepared himself, seeing the charred corpse with its abdomen split open and the dwarf pinned inside with a dagger still made him nauseous.
Just as he was about to step outside for some fresh air, he heard the criminal investigation captain say:
“We checked the deceased Sun Biyun’s computer and discovered records concerning the transportation of more than fifty people. But after verifying the information, we found that every single one of those people had already died beforehand…”
