B5SB -Chapter 17 Going Up the Mountain (Part 2)

Born in the ’50s, Switched at Birth 5 min read 17 of 306 90

Grandma Gu and the others went up the mountain. Even the wild vegetables around the outskirts were all gone.

Since she was leading several children, Grandma Gu didn’t dare to go deep into the mountains, so they could only wander around the outer areas.

Gu Yihan was carefully looking for wild vegetables while silently grumbling in her mind.

All those stories where the female lead goes up the mountain and encounters a wild boar, and the male lead heroically saves her… or where she falls into a cave full of gold, or finds ginseng growing in clusters for her to pick…

She was so lost in these daydreams that she didn’t notice where she was stepping—and stepped right into cow dung.

The moment Gu Yihan felt it, she didn’t even need to look: she knew she was living the life of a side character.

She would have to figure out how to work in the city on her own; she wasn’t destined to meet a “talent scout.” Sobbing internally, she realized her fate was only to step in poop.

“Grandma, I stepped in cow dung,” Gu Yihan said, standing stiffly.

Grandma Gu came over and looked down at her granddaughter. “Oh my, Hannan, your luck is amazing! Such a big pile.”

“This is because the little boy who tends the cattle didn’t clean up properly. You just got the leftover,” Gu Yihan thought, feeling completely miserable.

She hurriedly took off her shoes.

She told Grandma stiffly, “Grandma, these shoes still have luck on them. I won’t wear them now. I’ll take them home and rub them in the garden a bit so our vegetables get some good fortune too.”

Gu Meng looked at Gu Yihan’s expression and couldn’t help but giggle. “So, you’re planning to go back barefoot?”

Gu Yihan smiled at her. “I’ll wear straw sandals back. I can make them myself.”

Grandma Gu was surprised. “When did you learn to make straw sandals?”

Pulling on her grandma’s sleeve, Gu Yihan coquettishly said, “Don’t you see whose granddaughter I am? I watched Grandpa make them a few times, and I learned.”

Grandma Gu didn’t argue. She picked up the cow dung and went back to looking for wild vegetables.

Gu Yihan looked at Gu Meng proudly. She might have been underestimated, but having grown up in an orphanage, she knew how to cook, mend clothes, and make straw sandals.

She gathered some cattail suitable for weaving straw sandals and started weaving skillfully. Her hands weren’t very strong, so the sandals could only be worn by Jiang Jiang, but she didn’t mind.

Once the straw sandals were ready, Gu Yihan said, “Grandma, I’m going over there to look for wild vegetables.”

Grandma Gu, digging up wild vegetables, looked up and saw where her granddaughter was pointing. “Okay, be careful. Don’t wander too far.”

Gu Yihan walked toward a less crowded area. Gathering things in clusters was a big no-no; she didn’t want to go with the others.

While searching for wild vegetables, Gu Yihan thought about her life since arriving in this era.

Her family, though they didn’t let her go hungry, was nothing compared to the life she had in her previous life. Luckily, she secretly supplemented her meals and never went hungry. She always guarded her own space tightly and trusted no one.

So she couldn’t relate to their instinct of grabbing every little sprout of wild vegetables to take home.

She picked only the best-looking wild vegetables.

By a small mound, Gu Yihan spotted a hole. Could this be a rabbit hole? There were several holes around the area.

She cautiously looked around and saw no one nearby.

Taking a small iron spade from her space, she left only two holes open and blocked all the others.

Gathering some dry grass and wood, she lit a fire at one hole while blocking the other with a basket.

After half an hour of fumigating, she heard movement and finally saw four gray rabbits and six baby rabbits run into the basket.

Seeing the rabbits, she was overjoyed. She tied them up with grass rope, placed them at the bottom, covered them with wild vegetables, and ran straight toward Grandma Gu.

Grandma Gu saw the commotion and her granddaughter’s hair flying as she ran. “Slow down, don’t fall!”

Gu Yihan said with a mysterious smile, “Grandma, want to see a little treasure?”

Grandma Gu peered into the basket and saw the rabbits—what a surprise!

She immediately stopped looking for wild vegetables. “You caught them?”

Gu Yihan proudly said, “I smoked them out. I blocked the rabbit hole.”

Grandma Gu was delighted. “Clever girl! Your lessons weren’t wasted. Let’s go home.”

“Mengmeng, Daya, we’re going home,” Grandma Gu called.

Gu Meng and Daya echoed in unison, “Okay, Grandma.”

Zhang, the wife of village head Gu Guodong, saw Grandma Gu and the others heading down the mountain. “Auntie, you’re coming down so early?”

Grandma Gu smiled. “Getting old. I can’t resist it. My legs hurt, so it’s better to go back.”

After greeting others, the women went down the mountain together.

Gu Yihan didn’t notice Liu Zhaodi’s older girl glancing at her with a poisonous look and murmuring under her breath, “How are you so lucky? You should be like me.”
