After Gu Yihan ran out, she hid for a while. She secretly drank a cup of milk and ate a steamed bun first. Only after she was full did she continue.
She didn’t find Grandma Gu in the private plot, so after thinking for a moment, she began running along the dirt road in the village. From afar, she saw the brigade leader, Gu Baoqing.
Anxiously, Gu Yihan asked, “Uncle Team Leader, do you know which field my family is working in?”
Seeing how worried she was, the brigade leader pointed her in a direction.
Following his guidance, Gu Yihan soon arrived at the field and quickly spotted Grandma Gu.
She immediately put on a wronged expression and called out, “Grandma…”
When Grandma Gu heard her, she looked up and saw her little granddaughter’s pitiful face. She hurried over. “What’s wrong? Did someone bully you?”
“Grandma, my maternal grandma came to our house. She scolded me and even scolded you. Mom was going to hit me, so I ran out by myself,” Gu Yihan said, fanning the flames as she clutched Grandma Gu.
“Oh my heavens! That old witch actually dared to come to our house and bully people! I’ll tear her mouth apart!” Grandma Gu said angrily, preparing to take Gu Yihan home.
Gu Yihan pretended to be cautious and pulled her back. “No, Grandma. When I left, I saw my mom’s brother hiding near our yard. If we go back now, we won’t be able to beat them.”
Grandma Gu slapped her thigh. “Oh no! They must be here to borrow grain!”
She turned and shouted toward the distance, “Eldest! Second! Stop working and come home right now!”
Hearing their mother’s shout, Gu Aiguo and Gu Aidang both walked over.
Gu Aiguo said honestly, “Mom, why are we going home at this time? We still need to water the fields.”
Gu Aidang echoed him.
Grandma Gu grabbed Gu Aidang and started hitting him. “Your wife’s mother is here! If you don’t go back, our house will be emptied! I told you not to marry Zhang Cuihua, but you wouldn’t listen. She’s a troublemaker!”
The whole family hurried home.
“Zhang Cuihua! Zhang Cuihua, come out!” Grandma Gu shouted for a while, but no one answered.
Gu Aidang went into the room and found no one inside. “Mom, Cuihua isn’t home.”
Grandma Gu went to the kitchen and saw that all the grain was gone.
“We’ve got a thief in the house! We can’t keep a daughter-in-law like this! Oh no—there’s still grain in my room!”
She rushed to her room and opened the door. All three sacks of grain were gone. She collapsed on the ground and cried.
“Heavens! Strike that ungrateful wretch dead with lightning!”
Gu Aiguo said, “Mom, let’s report this to the police. That’s life-saving grain.”
Gu Aidang panicked when he heard about calling the police. “Mom, Cuihua isn’t home. Maybe it’s a misunderstanding?”
Grandma Gu yelled, pointing at him. “Bullshit! If it’s not her, who else could it be? Gu Aidang, you must divorce that heartless Zhang Cuihua!”
Gu Aidang coaxed her softly. “Mom, look at you, you’re scolding yourself again. Don’t worry, your son won’t let her off.”
Just then, Zhang Cuihua came back, pretending nothing had happened.
“Mom, everyone’s home?”
Grandma Gu sneered. “Zhang Cuihua, stop pretending. If you don’t return those sacks of grain, our Gu family won’t keep you!”
Zhang Cuihua looked innocent. “Mom, aren’t you mistaken? My mother did come, but she couldn’t have taken that much grain!”
Then she added with an annoyed expression, “Maybe thieves broke in. It really has nothing to do with my family.”
She turned to Gu Yihan and scolded her, “You little slut! I told you to watch the house, and you ran out to play!”
Gu Yihan was speechless. What did this have to do with her?
“My grandma didn’t come alone. She came with my uncle. I saw him hiding behind our house,” Gu Yihan said, hiding behind Grandma Gu.
When Grandma Gu saw Zhang Cuihua rushing over angrily, ready to hit the child, her vision went dark.
“Second son, stop her!”
Gu Aidang grabbed Zhang Cuihua. “Have you made enough trouble? Don’t think everyone else is stupid.”
Gu Aiguo said painfully, “Mom, we should still report it.”
Grandma Gu, thinking of her granddaughters, shook her head. “No police. Second son, send her back to her parents’ home and have the team leader write a divorce certificate.”
When Zhang Cuihua heard the word “divorce,” she exploded.
“Mom, you’re making Aidang divorce me for this bastard? I knew it! That little slut brings me bad luck!”
She refused to leave. Gu Aidang ignored her and dragged her away.
“Gu Aidang, you heartless bastard! I gave you children, and you’ll die a horrible death!” Zhang Cuihua cursed, her eyes filled with venom as she lay on the ground.
Her shouting attracted villagers.
The village secretary’s wife, Sister Zhang, asked, “Aidang, what’s going on?”
Gu Aidang sighed and didn’t hide anything. “She gave all our grain to her family. That’s life-saving food. We’re getting a divorce certificate.”
The villagers gasped.
Times were bad, and the harvest looked poor. Grain was a matter of life and death.
A hooligan from the Jiawang family sneered, “If she were my wife, I’d beat her to death.”
Zhang Cuihua cried and shouted, “Gu Aidang, stop talking nonsense! You just want to marry Widow Zhao because I can’t give you a son!”
An aunt whispered, “Could it be true that Aidang is involved with Widow Zhao?”
Another woman laughed, “Who knows? That fox Zhao twists her waist like crazy. One day she’ll break it.”
Everyone burst out laughing.
Gu Aidang ignored them and dragged Zhang Cuihua to the brigade leader’s house.
“Uncle Gu, are you home?”
The brigade leader came out and saw Zhang Cuihua’s miserable state. “Aidang, what happened?”
Gu Aidang explained everything. “Uncle, we never registered our marriage. Please issue a divorce certificate.”
Knowing family matters were hard to judge, the leader nodded. “Alright.”
He led them to the brigade office, wrote two divorce certificates, and handed them over.
“Here, it’s done.”
Gu Aidang stuffed one copy into Zhang Cuihua’s hand, dragged her to the village entrance, then turned and left.
Holding the certificate, Zhang Cuihua laughed and cried at the same time. With dead, lifeless eyes, she stared at his departing figure.
She would make them regret it.
Liu Zhaodi watched everything unfold and felt extremely relieved. She was glad she had exchanged that “money-losing girl” for a fat baby boy back then. Otherwise, the one being divorced today would have been her.
