After finishing the household chores, Gu Aiguo and Gu Aidang went to pick up their respective wives. Wang Ni led Gu Daya back safely. Everything seemed peaceful.
When Zhang Cuihua saw Gu Aidang standing at the door, she said angrily, “So you finally remembered to come get me? Why didn’t you wait until after the New Year? It’s already the 29th today—tomorrow is New Year’s Eve—and only now you come!”
“Why are you making a fuss?” Gu Aidang ignored her and walked into the house. “Mother, I’ve come to take Cuihua and Mengmeng home. There have been things going on at home these past few days. Thank you for taking care of them.” As he spoke, he handed over a jin of wild boar meat.
Zhang Cuihua’s mother accepted the meat expressionlessly. “Son-in-law, you’re not young anymore. You should have another child.”
Gu Aidang’s face darkened. Zhang Cuihua clearly thought her natal family could back her up.
Seeing his expression, her mother pretended not to notice and continued, “You don’t even share a bed with Cuihua. How can she get pregnant on her own? Even if she wants to, she doesn’t have the strength.”
Gu Aidang sneered. “When she was pregnant before, she fell and caused premature labor. It damaged her body. Granny Gu said it would be hard for her to conceive again.”
Then he looked at Zhang Cuihua and said, “I gave you several years. But you still couldn’t get pregnant. You think I don’t know? Liu Zhaodi already told me everything.”
Zhang Cuihua’s face turned pale. “Granny Gu said if I took good care of myself, I could still get pregnant.”
Gu Aidang laughed mockingly. “Have we ever deprived you of food? Do you think you deserve bird’s nest or something?”
Hearing that the problem was her daughter’s, Zhang Cuihua’s mother had nothing more to say. Without a son, she had no confidence.
In the end, Zhang Cuihua could only leave gloomily with her eldest daughter, Gu Meng, following Gu Aidang home.
Meanwhile, Gu Yihan was going with Gu Hao to check the fish traps by the river. When they reached the door, they saw Gu Aidang bringing Zhang Cuihua and Gu Meng back.
The moment Zhang Cuihua saw Gu Yihan, resentment flooded her mind.
Gu Yihan only felt herself suddenly pushed to the ground, and then her neck was tightly grabbed.
“You little bitch! Why don’t you just die! It’s all because of you that I can’t have children!” She shouted while desperately choking Gu Yihan.
Gu Hao froze for a moment, then hurriedly tried to pry Zhang Cuihua’s hands away. Gu Yihan’s face had already turned bright red.
In her fury, Zhang Cuihua was too strong for Gu Hao alone.
“Second Uncle, hurry and help!” he shouted.
Only then did Gu Aidang react. He rushed over and, together with Gu Hao, restrained Zhang Cuihua. By then, Gu Yihan had already passed out.
Hearing the noise, Grandma Gu rushed out and saw Gu Yihan lying on the ground. She shouted for Gu Hao to send the child to Uncle Gu, the village’s barefoot doctor.
When Gu Yihan woke up, she saw Grandma Gu sitting by her bed. Tears immediately fell.
“Grandma…”
Grandma Gu said worriedly, “Don’t talk. Uncle Gu said your throat is injured.”
Hearing the concern in her voice, Gu Yihan cried out loud for the first time.
Grandma Gu held her tightly. “I won’t let your mother get close to you again. She’s a lunatic, a heartless creature.”
“You must be hungry. Grandma made you some porridge.” Wiping her tears, she went out.
Gu Yihan felt truly wronged. She could clearly sense that Zhang Cuihua had wanted to kill her. She had thought she wouldn’t survive this time.
Grandma Gu stormed straight into Gu Aidang’s room and slammed the door open. “Our family has really had bad luck for eight lifetimes to marry a woman like you! Even a tiger doesn’t eat its own cubs!”
Zhang Cuihua replied viciously, “She’s my child! If I want her to die, she has to die properly!”
Grandma Gu was about to curse her—
“Grandma…” Gu Yihan stood there, pale, the bruises on her neck standing out clearly.
Enduring the pain in her throat, she said, “Don’t be angry. It’s not worth it.”
Zhang Cuihua cursed wildly, “You ungrateful little wretch! You money-losing good-for-nothing! You ruined me! You’re my bad luck! I’ll only be happy when you’re dead!”
“And that shameless father of yours isn’t any better! Don’t think I don’t know about him and that Widow Zhao! None of you will die well!”
Gu Aidang, hearing this, slapped her hard. “You’ve gone crazy! If you want to die, go back to your parents’ home and die! Don’t think I won’t divorce you, you useless woman who can’t even bear children!”
Seeing her so-called parents fighting, Gu Yihan worried Grandma Gu might get hurt. She quickly grabbed her hand and pulled her outside.
Grandma Gu was heartbroken. She had never liked Zhang Cuihua from the start, but her second son had insisted on marrying her. Now things had come to this.
“Grandma, don’t worry,” Gu Yihan said with difficulty. “You still have us. Dad is already an adult—he has his own ideas. Just take care of us younger ones.”
Looking at her worried granddaughter, Grandma Gu sighed. “Your parents are both useless. I’m done meddling. They never listen to me anyway.”
Gu Yihan smiled faintly and said nothing, leading Grandma Gu slowly back inside.
In the courtyard, Gu Meng stood alone, watching everything.
Her parents were fighting, hurling the most vicious words at each other. Gu Hao’s family stayed in their room, pretending not to hear.
Grandma Gu’s eyes were always on little Gu Yihan and cousin Gu Hao. It seemed that no one in this family liked her.
From that moment on, she wanted to escape.
She wanted to grow up quickly and get married.
As long as she married out, she would never have to return to this cold and heartless home again.
