Gu Yihan and Gu Hao were on winter vacation. Soon, it was Little New Year, and everyone at home began preparing for the New Year.
Grandma Gu slaughtered the hen that had stopped laying eggs. When Yihan saw her grandmother throwing the chicken intestines together with the feathers, she ran over.
“Grandma, aren’t you keeping the chicken intestines?” she asked.
“You can’t eat that stuff,” Grandma Gu replied while cleaning the chicken.
Gu Yihan then ran over to her grandfather and said coquettishly, “Grandpa, can you make me a fish trap?”
Seeing that his little granddaughter rarely asked for anything, Grandpa Gu smiled and said, “Sure. I’ll make you a few.”
Watching her grandfather’s nimble fingers weaving the trap, Yihan took the finished fish basket and ran to Gu Hao.
“Big Brother, let’s go catch fish!”
Gu Hao shook his head. “We won’t catch anything. It’s too cold now. You can’t go into the river.”
Yihan held up the fish trap. “We’ll use this! Put the chicken intestines Grandma just cleaned inside. Let’s go together!”
Unable to withstand her persistence, Gu Hao sighed. “Alright, I’ll go with you. But don’t run around.”
Happily, she went with her cousin to the river and put the traps into the water.
Then Yihan said, “Big Brother, let’s not wait here. Let’s go to the foot of the mountain. I saw a trap there the other day. I don’t know who dug it.”
“A trap?” Gu Hao asked in surprise.
She nodded. Of course, she couldn’t say that she had secretly dug it herself little by little with the small shovel from her space.
Once, when she went into the mountains, she encountered a wild boar and was terribly frightened. In her panic, she stored it in her space and quickly killed it with her mind.
Gu Hao was tempted. “Then let’s go take a look.”
“Let’s go!” she said quickly.
Gu Hao walked leisurely. Yihan’s legs were too short, so she couldn’t walk fast. He wanted to carry her, but she refused.
After walking for quite a while, they were almost at the trap. Yihan quickly used her mind to move the wild boar into it.
When they reached the trap—
“Look, there’s a wild boar!” Yihan exclaimed, pretending to be shocked.
Gu Hao stared at the shallow pit and said in surprise, “There really is one.”
Cautiously, he poked the boar with a stick. When it didn’t move, he climbed down and touched it. It was still warm.
“It must have just died. We’re really lucky,” he said.
Yihan secretly rolled her eyes. Of course it was warm—it had just been taken out of her space.
Gu Hao gathered many dry branches and piled them over the pit until the boar couldn’t be seen at all. From afar, it just looked like a heap of deadwood.
He repeatedly warned her, “Wait here. I’ll run home and get Dad and Second Uncle. If anyone asks, say you’re waiting for me to bring a cart to haul firewood, okay?”
“I know, you’ve said it a dozen times,” Yihan replied helplessly.
Gu Hao hurried back home.
When he arrived, he saw Grandma cleaning the yard.
“Grandma, are Dad and Second Uncle at home?”
“They’re resting inside. Weren’t you with Yihan? Why are you back alone?” she asked.
Panting, Gu Hao said, “She’s guarding a wild boar on the mountain. I came to get Dad and Second Uncle to bring it back!”
Grandma thought she had misheard. “What? A wild boar?”
“Yes. A dead one,” Gu Hao said.
She immediately shouted, “Eldest! Second! Come out quickly!”
Gu Aiguo and Gu Aidang rushed out. “Mom, what’s wrong?”
Hurrying anxiously, Grandma said, “Quick, bring the cart and go get Yihan!”
Uncle Gu was startled. “What happened? Did something happen to Yihan?”
Gu Hao said helplessly, “Nothing happened. We found a recently dead wild boar. She’s waiting there.”
The two uncles exchanged a glance and quickly prepared the cart and followed Gu Hao up the mountain.
Seeing that his grandmother also wanted to go, Gu Hao gently pushed her back inside.
“Grandma, stay home. It’s just at the foot of the mountain. If it were deeper, I wouldn’t dare leave her there.”
Left with no choice, Grandma waited anxiously.
As the three of them pulled the cart away, villagers saw them and asked what they were doing.
Gu Hao laughed. “My cousin and I were picking up firewood. We got too much, she got tired and refused to come down, so we had to come get her.”
One aunt said, “Wow, your family really pampers that girl.”
The three of them didn’t want to argue and just said, “We have to hurry, or she’ll get anxious.”
Liu Zhaodi spat. “Tch. Acting like she’s some young lady. In the end, she’ll just be married off—a waste of money.”
Another aunt replied, “You think every family is like yours, treating girls like nothing? Don’t expect your daughters to be filial later.”
Liu Zhaodi sneered. “Your parents treat you well, but I don’t see you being that filial. What a white-eyed wolf. If I were your mother, I’d be furious.”
That aunt grabbed Liu Zhaodi’s hair. “I’ll tear your filthy mouth apart!”
Liu Zhaodi fought back, punching at her chest. The onlookers hurried over to pull the two apart.
