The sky gradually darkened.

The “master” didn’t rush home. Instead, he went to the night market and bought a pile of food.

At first, Ruan Yaoyao thought he was bringing it back for his son. But as she followed him, she began to feel something was off.

【This guy isn’t heading toward the school, is he?】

【Didn’t they say he’s staying at my fifth son’s place?】

By “fifth son’s place,” Ruan Yaoyao meant the property they had purchased near the school for Xu Hongye—so he could stay there whenever he didn’t feel like living in the dorm and wanted some peace and quiet.

Ruan Yaoyao had lived in dorms before. She knew that no matter how good the facilities were, they still couldn’t compare to home—and there were always roommates to deal with.

Compared to her own home, it was always lacking.

Although she wanted to cultivate her son’s independence, there was no need to deliberately lower his quality of life just to toughen him up.

Ruan Zhihe silently accompanied her as they followed him all the way to the outskirts.

A deep stillness blanketed the land.

There were no human voices, no traffic noise—like a forgotten corner of the world.

Moonlight flowed like water, gently caressing the grass and trees, draping everything in a silvery veil.

Just as the two were wondering what he was here for, they saw him take out a stick of incense and light it.

Ruan Zhihe: Holy crap! Don’t tell me he’s actually summoning souls?!

A gentle breeze rustled the leaves, like a quiet ancient melody.

Insects chirped softly in the grass, adding a hint of life to the silent night.

Watching the “master” wave incense and dance around like some spirit medium, Ruan Yaoyao fell silent:

【Is he insane?】

【Instead of sleeping in the middle of the night, he’s dancing here?】

【And dancing this badly!】

Ruan Zhihe’s pupils trembled: Are you sure this isn’t a summoning ritual?

Just as she thought that, she saw tiny glowing lights appear on the grass—like fireflies—rising bit by bit.

More and more of them floated upward.

Until they gathered together into a small glowing orb the size of a palm.

Gradually, the orb grew tiny arms… and limbs… along with a body no bigger than one-twentieth the size of a head.

It reminded Ruan Zhihe of the little “radish spirit” Ruan Yaoyao often used when playing games.

The little creature had no eyes or nose. It floated in midair and happily drifted toward the master.

Ruan Zhihe sneakily glanced at Ruan Yaoyao: See? He really summoned something!

【Huh?】

Ruan Yaoyao’s pupils widened in shock.

In that instant, she suddenly understood why this world had “invaders.”

Holy—

If even moonlight could gain sentience, then…

She suddenly looked up at the sky and earth:

【No wonder the spiritual energy in this world is increasing. I thought it was brought by the invaders.】

【But what if it’s the other way around? What if the invaders targeted this world because its spiritual energy is increasing?】

Ruan Zhihe: What do you mean?!

【My god!】

Ruan Zhihe: Stop gasping and explain! I don’t understand any of this! What’s happening to this world? Why would more spiritual energy attract them?!

【Because this world is evolving!】

Ruan Zhihe: ????

She understood every word individually… but together, it made no sense.

【A world in the process of evolving holds infinite possibilities—and its world barrier is at its weakest.】

【If its coordinates are discovered before it’s fully prepared, it can be invaded.】

【Once the invasion succeeds, all the resources gained after the world’s evolution will belong to the invaders—completely benefiting their own world.】

【That’s their true goal!】

【Because they know this is their only chance. Once this world successfully evolves, they may not be able to defeat it—or the cost would be far greater.】

Ruan Zhihe was even more shocked.

Ruan Yaoyao looked at the spirit floating happily around the master, and felt a surge of irritation.

Newly born spirits were extremely “pure”—easily deceived and manipulated.

Clearly, this one had been found by chance… and was now being used.

Now she finally understood what this so-called “soul summoning” was about.

He had colluded with a spirit, tricking it into appearing before mortals—pretending to be the souls of their loved ones.

And just like that…

The master was currently negotiating with the spirit, which nodded happily, agreeing to his request.

“You shut up!” Ruan Yaoyao finally snapped, stepping out. “Even a newborn spirit—you’re deceiving it? Are you even human?!”

She didn’t care whether this master had real abilities or not. If he corrupted a newborn spirit, what then?

Did he even know what a spirit was?

A spirit was something born from the very essence of heaven and earth—a pure lifeform that only appeared during the early stages of a world’s evolution.

Later, once the world matured, such beings would no longer be born.

Because spirits represented the purest beauty of existence—something only possible when everything was still simple and untainted.

Once that purity was lost, they could no longer come into being.

Spirits were completely different from elves or demons.

They were the embodiment of goodness itself.

The master was startled and instinctively tried to hide the spirit. But when he saw it was just two women, his courage returned.

“How dare you!” he barked. “This master is performing a summoning ritual, and you dare disrupt it? Are you tired of living?!”

Ruan Yaoyao rolled her eyes. “You’re the one who’s tired of living. Summoning souls? Is that even a soul? If you’re so capable, summon an actual one for me to see.”

“Are you blind?” the master snapped, holding up the spirit. “What do you think this is?!”

“Heh.” Ruan Yaoyao sneered.

Her fingers moved swiftly, forming a hand seal. Points of white light gathered at her fingertips, quickly condensing into a small silver orb the size of a quail egg.

The moment the orb appeared, the spirit reacted as if it had seen something it loved—it flew straight toward Ruan Yaoyao.

It looked at her eagerly, pleading for the object in her hand.

Ruan Yaoyao opened her palm and smiled. “This was specially refined as a gift for you. You must have been born not long ago—you must be starving, right?”

Although incense offerings could sustain it, spirits naturally preferred things born from heaven and earth.

Like spiritual energy.

Spirits could absorb energy from the environment themselves—but since the world was still in the process of evolving, spiritual energy was limited.

And as a newborn, it couldn’t absorb much on its own.

That’s why it had been surviving in a half-starved state, relying on incense to barely get by.

This was also why, in the early stages of a world’s evolution, even if spirits were born, they often vanished quickly due to insufficient energy—unknown to humanity.

After all, if no one knew they were born, and no one noticed when they disappeared, it was as if they had never existed at all.

Ruan Yaoyao didn’t know how this so-called “master” had discovered the spirit. She could only say he was lucky.

But if he used it to commit evil…

Then the spirit would turn into something far worse.

When something reaches the extreme, it reverses.

The purer and more beautiful something is, the more terrifying it becomes when it falls into darkness—either growing powerful itself, or bringing disaster to all living beings around it.
