The two were having coffee when Fan Xin suddenly received a call from the hospital. They said her brother had been in a car accident and told her to come immediately.
Fan Xin was so startled that she spilled the coffee in her hand. Although she was angry at her brother for being so spineless—almost getting led astray by Dai Yudie—she only wanted to cripple him, not see him dead.
She immediately stopped drinking, hurriedly greeted Ruan Yaoyao, and rushed toward the hospital.
“Don’t panic. Your brother will be fine. I’ll go with you,” Ruan Yaoyao said. “You’re in no state to drive like this.”
“Thank you, Sister,” Fan Xin replied, only then realizing her hands were trembling.
When they rushed to the hospital, Fan Xin discovered that her brother had only suffered a minor scrape and was otherwise fine. Tears immediately welled up in her eyes.
“You scared me to death! You idiot!”
Fan Yi was also startled by her reaction. He hadn’t expected his sister to be this worried and quickly explained, “I’m fine. The car was moving slowly—I just bumped into something by accident.”
…
Ruan Yaoyao quietly observed, confirming that Fan Xin’s concern for her brother was genuine, not an act. That meant she was real, not a fake.
As for whether she was being controlled by the plot, Ruan Yaoyao wasn’t too worried.
She had encountered many people—anyone under the plot’s control would eventually be “freed” after interacting with her. She just hadn’t figured out the exact mechanism yet.
Seeing that Ruan Yaoyao had “confirmed” Fan Xin’s identity, Ruan Zhihe also let out a sigh of relief.
As long as she wasn’t an outsider, it was fine. Once the “control” was lifted, everything would be okay. If she were an outsider, things would be troublesome.
So far, they had encountered three waves of outsiders: one group of unidentified “invaders,” one group from the “Horus Star System,” and then Dai Yudie—the mysterious transmigrator whose origin remained unknown.
For now, they still didn’t know how to deal with this transmigrator.
If she had truly “transmigrated with her physical body”…
Ruan Zhihe lowered her gaze slightly.
If that were the case, the people at the Academy of Sciences would be very interested. The only question was whether they could capture her—hopefully she wouldn’t abandon her body and escape like the previous invaders.
That was why they hadn’t taken action yet.
Clearly, Dai Yudie’s morals were questionable—snatching someone else’s future husband and recognizing Qian Laoshi as her stepfather.
At the same time, she was spending money to hire online trolls to cyberbully Ruan Yaoyao, while crying pitifully in front of Lao Jianian:
“Wuwu… how could they do this? When I got together with you, I didn’t know she liked you. If I had known…”
“If you had known what?” Lao Jianian frowned, displeased. “If you had known, you wouldn’t have been with me? What do you take me for?”
With reddened eyes, Dai Yudie said, “Then what should I do? I grew up without a mother, raised by my stepfather… and now they’re saying such things about him… I can’t even say it out loud. If your mother finds out, will she still let us be together? No matter how open-minded she is, she wouldn’t allow her son to be with a woman like me… Jia, I don’t want to leave you! I really like you!”
“Yudie…” Lao Jianian felt a surge of pity and pulled her into his arms. “This is all Fan Xin’s fault! She’s scheming and malicious, trying to harm you. Don’t worry—she won’t succeed. No one can separate us.”
“Jianian…”
…
While others might deliver themselves to trouble, Lao Jianian practically went looking for insults.
Fan Xin directly told him to go online and see what kind of man Dai Yudie’s so-called father really was—whether she truly didn’t know or was pretending not to know. The police had already found evidence; only fools would still be deceived.
She shoved her phone right in front of him—a police notice thanking a concerned citizen for helping capture a long-wanted criminal surnamed Qian.
And that notice had been reposted by Ruan Yaoyao with the caption: “No need to thank me! It’s what any responsible citizen should do!”
Fan Xin sneered. “Don’t tell me you think I framed her father? Sorry, I’m not that capable. Though if I were, I’d have sent her in myself. And keep your disgusting girlfriend away from me. I must have had terrible luck in eight lifetimes to be your childhood sweetheart from kindergarten through high school. She hates me for no reason. If I really liked you, I would’ve done so ages ago—why would I wait until now?”
She even told him to go home, wash up, and look in the mirror. With his lack of brains, only someone like Dai Yudie would want him—no normal person would.
Was he really that bad?
Lao Jianian was deeply shaken.
He thought he was at least somewhat handsome, and having inherited his family’s company, he was considered an eligible bachelor in the industry. Why did she look down on him so much?
Somewhere deep inside, he felt like he had lost something.
Fan Xin, being decisive, was fed up with Dai Yudie dragging her into everything. She exposed the matter directly to Lao Jianian’s mother, including the police notice.
When Lao Jianian returned home, he was met with his mother’s interrogation—what exactly was going on with him and his girlfriend? Wasn’t she supposed to be some runaway rich girl? How did she become the daughter of a rapist?
If that were true, she would never approve of their relationship.
Lao Jianian couldn’t defend himself.
When he got together with Dai Yudie, she was still the “runaway heiress.” Who would’ve thought things would change so quickly?
He tried to explain that the man wasn’t her biological father but her stepfather.
His mother responded, “What?! Stepfather? Then… was she abused by him?”
“Mom…”
“That man is a rapist. Who knows if he ever targeted her? What if he did?”
Lao Jianian was speechless.
He suddenly recalled that after they got together, Dai Yudie had been unusually experienced. At the time, he hadn’t thought much of it—everyone has a past, after all. Even he did.
But a past was one thing—this was something else entirely.
Dai Yudie’s image in his eyes instantly became unfamiliar.
Perhaps he really should investigate her.
When the authorities learned that Lao Jianian had started looking into Dai Yudie, they gave him a little push—leading him to discover the day she had seemingly “fallen from the sky.”
Lao Jianian: “…”
What?!
She had only acknowledged that stepfather recently?!
Could she be a spy? Otherwise, how could her origins be completely untraceable, yet she recognized such a man as her stepfather?
Lao Jianian decided to report it to the police.
Ruan Yaoyao couldn’t help but laugh as she said to Ruan Zhihe, “So in the end, she still falls into our hands?”
Ruan Zhihe nodded. “Yes. No one expected that despite being love-struck, once Lao Jianian realized he couldn’t trace her origins, he’d suspect she was a spy and report her.”
When the higher-ups asked Ruan Yaoyao whether, now that things had reached this point, they could openly arrest Dai Yudie, she agreed.
After all, they weren’t arresting her without reason—they had legitimate grounds.
“Go ahead,” she said. “Arrest her.”
They could investigate slowly after bringing her in. If she couldn’t explain her origins clearly, they would handle it as a case of espionage.
Whether she had transmigrated physically or “descended” into this world—they would find out soon enough.
