“Since you’re her aunt, don’t tell me you don’t want her to get better?”
“Of course I do!” Lu Chahua quickly replied. “My elder brother only has this one daughter. If she doesn’t recover, how pitiful would he be? No son at all, only a daughter—and she’s mentally ill. You have no idea how many people mock my brother for this. His life has been miserable…”
She went on and on, using Lu’s father to play the victim.
Meanwhile, her calculating gaze swept over Ruan Yaoyao from head to toe—lingering especially on the jewelry on her ears and wrist, circling them several times with her eyes.
She even glanced repeatedly at the gift bags in Xie Xiuming’s hands, looking as if she wanted nothing more than to snatch them.
Lu’s mother tried to speak several times, but Lu Chahua kept cutting her off, making her so angry that her hands trembled.
Ruan Yaoyao said, “Your brother does sound quite pitiful—no ability, can’t even support his own wife and child, has them living in a place like this. And not only does his own sister refuse to help, she even spreads rumors about him, exposes his weaknesses, and bullies his wife and child behind his back. I wonder what sins he committed in his past life to be born into your family.”
At first, Lu Chahua felt pleased, thinking Ruan Yaoyao agreed with her. But when she heard the rest, her expression changed immediately.
“What nonsense are you talking about?! If my brother can’t support his own family, how is that my fault? I’m a married woman—how much can I interfere?”
Ruan Yaoyao looked at her as if she had already seen through everything.
“Am I wrong? Weren’t all those messy rumors about your brother and sister-in-law spread by you and your mother? And you call yourself a ‘married woman’? Even after getting married, you still come running back home every day. It’s one thing to have your mother subsidize you, but now you’re even eyeing the little money your brother and his wife struggled to earn. So what—when they spend money treating their daughter, they’re foolish, but when they spend it on milk powder and toys for you and your son, that’s the right thing to do? And for the sake of a matchmaker’s fee, you even want your brother and sister-in-law to divorce, just so your brother can marry someone else’s foolish daughter and take over that family’s small property?”
“What are you talking about?!” Lu Chahua was nearly scared to death.
She never expected such a secret—something she had only discussed with her mother—to be known by an outsider.
She absolutely could not admit it.
“My master would never talk nonsense!” Lu Lingling was completely shocked. She had always known her aunt was awful, but she never imagined she was this awful!
“You want my parents to divorce—that’s one thing. But you even want my dad to marry a fool? Who do you think you are?!”
She stepped forward angrily. “My master can tell fortunes. Whatever you’re plotting, she can see it at a glance. I’m going to learn from her in the future—you can’t fool me!”
“You little brat, stay out of this!” Lu Chahua didn’t take her seriously at all and shoved her aside.
Lu’s mother immediately stepped in to protect her daughter, refusing to let Lu Chahua lay a hand on her.
At that moment, the old lady of the Lu family suddenly appeared from nowhere, forbidding Lu’s mother from touching her daughter and trying to suppress her using seniority.
Lu’s mother had endured for a long time, but for the sake of her daughter, she refused to endure any longer. No one was allowed to touch her child.
Lu Lingling charged forward recklessly, while her mother supported her from behind. Together, they started fighting with the old lady and Lu Chahua.
Originally, the mother and daughter duo should have been no match for the other two—but Ruan Yaoyao was there, and she was fiercely protective. She directly told Ruan Zhihe to step in and help.
Ruan Zhihe felt awkward attacking the two women, but she could at least help defend Lu Lingling and her mother. This created a strange scene—
Whenever the old lady and Lu Chahua tried to hit someone, Ruan Zhihe blocked them with whatever she could grab. But when Lu Lingling and her mother fought back—whether scratching, grabbing, or punching—those hits landed solidly on the other two.
Seeing they were at a disadvantage, the old lady and Lu Chahua ran off, still shouting vicious curses from afar—things like wishing others would bear sons without anuses, or be abused by men. They didn’t even spare fourteen-year-old Lu Lingling from their insults.
Lu’s mother gritted her teeth in anger.
“I’m sorry… you had to see that.”
“For Lingling’s sake, you’ve worked hard.”
Just that one sentence made Lu’s mother’s eyes turn red.
Though everything she had done for her daughter had been willing, how could she not feel wronged?
Everyone said she was useless—unable to bear a son, and even giving birth to a daughter with mental problems. If not for Lu’s father not abandoning her, she would have long been cast aside.
She had accepted her fate—that she had failed Lu Lingling, failed her husband, and ruined her daughter’s life.
“Waaah…”
Lu’s mother suddenly burst into tears.
Lu Lingling panicked, not knowing what to do. She looked pleadingly at Ruan Yaoyao, hoping her master could help.
【Sigh…】
Ruan Yaoyao sighed inwardly, took out a tissue, and said gently, “It’s okay. If you want to cry, then cry. Let it all out. Lingling is better now—she’ll grow up just like any normal girl, healthy and happy…”
“Thank you… If it weren’t for you, Lingling’s life would have been ruined.”
“It’s all in the past now. Things will get better.”
…
Lu’s mother invited Ruan Yaoyao to stay for dinner. At first, she didn’t want to, but thinking about Lingling’s grandmother and aunt, she decided to stay.
Though… dinner clearly couldn’t be held at home.
To save money, Lu’s parents rented a single room—without even a bathroom. After the old lady and Lu Chahua arrived, the couple didn’t even have a bed anymore and had to sleep on the floor.
Sometimes, Ruan Yaoyao really couldn’t understand how these people thought. They knew the couple was poor and could only afford a tiny room—so why insist on squeezing in and living in such a shabby place?
But the old lady and Lu Chahua didn’t care. They came to cause trouble and force a divorce. Until they achieved their goal, they wouldn’t give up.
So even knowing how terrible the conditions were, they endured it.
Ruan Yaoyao: “…”
Such perseverance.
If only they used that determination to make money instead.
Lu’s mother called her husband and arranged dinner at the place where she worked—a roadside eatery that seemed decent to them, but was actually quite run-down.
Xie Xiuming and Ruan Yaoyao: “…”
They had probably never set foot in such a shabby restaurant in their lives.
Even before entering, Ruan Yaoyao noticed mold on the walls, a yellowed ceiling, and tables that looked wiped—but never truly clean, always greasy.
Should I… suggest we go somewhere else?
But when she looked up at Lu’s mother—her hair streaked with gray, her face in her forties but aged like someone in her fifties—Ruan Yaoyao held back.
【Sigh…】
【Forget it. It’s just one meal. I’ll endure it.】
【At worst, I’ll just eat less.】
【Mm, I’ll say I don’t have much of an appetite.】
Xie Xiuming: “…”
