Wang Yukai: 【System, did you see that?】
System: 【I saw it!】
Wang Yukai: 【Are talismans supposed to be lit with a lighter?】
System: 【…First time I’ve seen that.】
Wang Yukai: 【Is it because she’s just an ordinary person, so she can only use a lighter?】
System: 【Maybe!】
Wang Yukai: 【Then does that mean there really are enlightened monks in this world?】
System: 【……】
Wang Yukai: 【The reason I couldn’t find any before… was that you interfered, right?】
System: 【No!】
Wang Yukai: 【I don’t believe you!】
System: 【……】
It could feel it.
From the moment that woman took out the talisman, something had begun slipping out of its control.
What the system didn’t know was that it wasn’t just from the moment Ruan Yaoyao took out the talisman—strictly speaking, from the moment Wang Yukai entered the sight of the authorities and Ruan Yaoyao, everything had already gone beyond its control.
So… did “enlightened monks” really exist in this world?
Both man and system fell silent.
Ruan Yaoyao smiled: How could they not exist? If they didn’t, then what am I?
Ruan Zhihe, who knew what was going on: Aunt Xu, nicely done!
The water sphere hovered silently in midair for a moment, as if it had lost gravity, then fell to the ground, bursting easily into a puddle.
Ruan Yaoyao looked at Wang Yukai and said with a smile, “See? I told you—it’s just a talisman. It proves nothing. Those enlightened monks have plenty of them, but they’re basically useless. Like cheap magic tricks—just something to fool people.”
For a brief moment, Lu Baojing hesitated: Could it be that some of the ‘magic tricks’ I saw as a child were actually real?
She looked at Wang Yukai, hoping he would present stronger evidence. Just like her friend’s boss had said—others had talismans too; his alone proved nothing.
Wang Yukai stared at Ruan Yaoyao. “Are you really just an ordinary person?”
Ruan Yaoyao blinked innocently. “Not exactly ordinary. My family owns shares in the hospital where Lu Rulan works. I’m rich.”
Wang Yukai’s mouth twitched. Was that what I meant?
“Fine. Since you’re all so eager for proof, I’ll show you.”
As soon as he finished speaking, black mist suddenly rose in the room, quickly engulfing everyone completely.
In the next instant, everything changed. They found themselves in a vast, empty desert.
A teleport to the desert?!
Just moments ago, they had been in a hotel in the city—how had they suddenly ended up here?!
Lu Baojing, Lu Rulan, Ruan Zhihe, and the four plainclothes officers couldn’t help but reveal shocked expressions.
Their worldview shattered.
Wang Yukai said, “See? I didn’t lie to you. This is the trial space.”
Ruan Yaoyao suppressed the urge to use a spell to clear things up and said, “This is the trial space? Are you sure? There’s nothing here…”
【So eerie…】
【I’m so hungry!】
【Want to eat…】
Ruan Zhihe nervously moved closer to Ruan Yaoyao, worried: Aunt Xu, now’s not the time to be hungry—deal with this first. When we get back, I’ll treat you to milk tea!
Lu Rulan, the officers, and even Lu Baojing instinctively moved closer to Ruan Yaoyao, seeking protection.
Others aside—but when Wang Yukai turned and saw even his girlfriend Lu Baojing standing behind Ruan Yaoyao, he felt uncomfortable.
“Jingjing, why are you standing behind her? She’s just an ordinary person. If anyone’s protecting you, it should be me.”
Lu Rulan couldn’t speak, but she could move. She tightly grabbed Lu Baojing’s hand, refusing to let her go to Wang Yukai.
You’ve got to be kidding!
How could you be more reliable than President Ruan?
If she wanted to deal with you, you’d already be done for!
Lu Rulan shot Ruan Yaoyao a look of trust.
Lu Baojing didn’t move. “I… I’ll stay with Rulan. She’s timid—I’m afraid she’ll be scared.”
She didn’t mention at all that she was worried Wang Yukai might “take revenge” and act against Lu Rulan behind her back.
Wang Yukai felt like he’d been stabbed in the heart, but hearing that it was to “protect” Lu Rulan, he could only glare at that eyesore.
“Fine. Then stay close. Don’t wander off. If you get lost or something happens, don’t blame me for not warning you.”
Then he said to Ruan Yaoyao, “We’re in the outskirts now. It’s normal there’s nothing here. Just follow me.”
Ruan Yaoyao: “Where to?”
“Trial City.”
…
The group followed Wang Yukai forward. Walking on the desert wasn’t easy, but the place he mentioned wasn’t far. After about ten minutes, they saw a massive stone city.
Half-hidden in the darkness, huge stones—each about three stories high—could be vaguely seen. They were neatly arranged, as if guarding something.
After countless years of weathering, the stone city bore the marks of time—worn and mottled, exuding a sense of ancient desolation and ruggedness.
Only upon getting closer did they realize the city gate was incomplete, battered and broken, as if something had gnawed on it.
Above the gate hung a chipped plaque with three wildly written characters—
Trial City.
No one noticed Ruan Yaoyao’s gaze flicker.
It really is called Trial City…
That name…
Kind of interesting.
She turned to look at Wang Yukai, as if wanting to say something, but in the end said nothing.
Just as everyone thought he would lead them inside, Wang Yukai only let them take a look from outside before turning to leave.
He explained that it wasn’t that he didn’t want to take them in—it was simply that ordinary people couldn’t enter.
There were only two kinds of people who could enter: locals, or trial participants like him. Anyone else would be treated as an “intruder” and eliminated.
Lu Rulan swallowed, wanting to say: By “eliminated”… you don’t mean killed, right?
But when she opened her mouth, she realized she still had a “silencing talisman” on her and couldn’t speak at all.
Lu Baojing, who knew her well, immediately understood and asked on her behalf, her face full of concern.
Wang Yukai nodded. “So I’ll just take you around the outskirts. Going inside is too dangerous.”
Of course, he wasn’t concerned about everyone else’s safety. From the moment he locked that door, no one except Lu Baojing was leaving alive.
He was only doing this to gain her favor.
He understood his girlfriend very well.
He said to Lu Baojing, “Now you believe me, right? I didn’t lie to you. Everything I said is true. Those other women—I was just playing along, it was all fake. The one I truly love is you. If I didn’t really like you, I wouldn’t have told you everything or brought you here, right?”
Lu Baojing didn’t speak.
She was moved—of course she was—but…
At that moment, Ruan Yaoyao spoke from the side:
“You call that ‘playing along’? Looks more like fake turned real to me. From what I see, it wasn’t just holding hands or going on dates with those girls—you did everything couples do, didn’t you? You can say it was all fake to your girlfriend, but kissing them and sleeping with them—that can’t be fake, can it?”
As soon as Ruan Yaoyao finished speaking, Lu Baojing’s expression changed.
Lu Rulan looked at her with admiration: President Ruan is still President Ruan—straight to the point!
