“What did you just say—who did you catch?!”
Hearing that Liang Shishi had almost been ambushed and bagged, Ru Anzhi wasn’t surprised. But how did he suddenly think he heard the name Lan Yuanzhong? Otherwise, why would that name come up?
“Lan Yuanzhong.”
“How is that possible?! Did you get it wrong? If someone wanted to target you, it should’ve been Bai Ling’er’s people. What does it have to do with Lan Yuanzhong?”
Liang Shishi looked speechless. “Why can’t it be him? Did you forget that he likes you? And you introduced me to him before, saying I’m your girlfriend. He didn’t have the chance before, but now that he finally found an opening, why wouldn’t he make a move on me?”
Ru Anzhi fell silent.
So when Ruan Yaoyao later saw him and subtly asked how he handled Lan Yuanzhong, he immediately thought of this incident and didn’t quite know how to respond.
“What’s wrong? Is it inconvenient to say? I’m your mom, you know.”
【If I hadn’t reminded you that your buddy’s circle had issues, how would you have found out he’s gay and become wary of him, instead of falling into his trap?】
【You should really thank me!】
“He’s been taken in.”
“Taken in? How did that happen? Did you find evidence of his crimes?” Ruan Yaoyao asked, pleasantly surprised.
【Wait, if there’s evidence of a crime, doesn’t that mean there’s already a victim?】
【Wasn’t he not supposed to have committed anything yet? How did it happen so quickly?!】
【Could it be because of me that the plot got advanced?】
“He tried to ambush Shishi.”
【Damn! Attacking law enforcement?!】
【Well, Liang Shishi isn’t a police officer, but…】
【Attacking a special forces soldier on duty is even more serious, right?】
【Should I arrange something too, and have Jiang Ying stage an ‘attack on police’?】
The corner of Ru Anzhi’s mouth twitched—he felt like his mom was being ridiculous.
Was “attacking police” something good?
Of course Ruan Yaoyao knew it wasn’t a good thing. The key point was, she couldn’t “arrange” something like that anyway. Jiang Ying might be obsessive, but she wouldn’t randomly attack people. The only reason she targeted those before was because, in her eyes, they were trying to steal her man.
【Or maybe I could arrange for someone to pursue Yu Yang, so she’d attack the person I set up?】
Seeing his mother heading straight down the road of “criminal suspect,” Ru Anzhi quickly cut in, “Mom, didn’t you say there was something wrong with our ancestral grave? How’s that going?”
“Oh, didn’t Xiangqiao tell you? We arranged for people to renovate it,” Ruan Yaoyao said innocently, not mentioning a word about the strange thing she saw—or the “snake” now living in her dantian.
Ru Anzhi wasn’t in a hurry. “She mentioned it briefly, but it’s hard to explain clearly over the phone.”
“What’s so hard to explain? It’s just those things.” Ruan Yaoyao waved her hand, saying they didn’t understand feng shui anyway, so it was better to leave it to professionals.
They would just pay.
Ru Anzhi: …
If those “professionals” could really solve it, that’d be great. The problem was, they couldn’t even see it—how could they fix anything?
His mom’s lies were getting more and more casual, without even trying to make sense anymore.
“What exactly are those things? Tell me.”
“I don’t understand it either—what would I tell you? Ask Xiangqiao. She was the one dealing with them.”
…
“Big Sister-in-law said you ran into a great beauty on your way back?”
At the mention of a beauty, Ruan Yaoyao perked up immediately. “She told you? She was gorgeous! Like a delicate, sickly beauty straight out of Dream of the Red Chamber—just like Lin Daiyu. Graceful and fragile, like a willow in the wind. Really stunning. But… I don’t know, something about her felt a bit off.”
“Oh? What was strange about her?” Ru Anzhi prompted.
“I can’t quite put my finger on it, it just felt odd… Why don’t you look into her?”
“Alright.”
Ruan Yaoyao didn’t even notice when her usually rule-abiding son had started “using public resources for private matters.”
With his promise, her mind was instantly at ease. Every few days, she would call to follow up, asking how the investigation into Jiang Ying was going.
Jiang Ying’s situation wasn’t complicated. With the detailed clues Ruan Yaoyao provided, it didn’t take long before even stories from when she was three and still wetting the bed were uncovered.
Then came information about her biological parents.
Just like Xie Xiuming once told Mai Xi, most abandoned children are girls—very rarely boys, especially not healthy ones.
That was exactly the case for both Jiang Ying and Yu Yang.
Jiang Ying was abandoned because her biological parents had already had three daughters in a row. By the time she was born, they simply couldn’t bear the burden anymore. On top of that, she was frail and often sick, and they feared she wouldn’t survive—so they left her at an orphanage.
Yu Yang, on the other hand, had been kidnapped by traffickers shortly after birth. Years later, when his biological parents had almost forgotten about him, they unexpectedly found him again and took him back.
In other words, among his current “adoptive” parents, one is actually his biological parent—they just never told him the truth.
Why didn’t they tell him?
Because after Yu Yang went missing, his biological parents divorced and each formed new families with new children. When Yu Yang was found again, it became an awkward situation.
But he was still their child—they couldn’t just abandon him.
So after discussion, they decided that the better-off father would “adopt” him.
That led to everything that followed: the Yu family investing heavily in cultivating Yu Yang, even paving the way for him to enter the entertainment industry to avoid inheritance conflicts with his younger brother, Yu Qing.
With his outstanding looks, Yu Yang quickly shot to fame and became an idol superstar.
The Yu family was vaguely aware that Yu Yang had a civilian girlfriend, but they didn’t take it seriously. In their view, they had already done their duty—given him everything they should. From here on, his life was his own.
Whether he chose to marry someone in the industry or outside it was entirely up to him.
As an idol, he certainly wouldn’t lack the money to support a family.
“So looking at it this way, aside from hiding Yu Yang’s background, the Yu family’s values are actually pretty decent. And they’ve treated him well—taking him back, nurturing him, and helping him stand on his own.”
Ruan Yaoyao flipped through the materials Liang Shishi had brought back for Ru Anzhi and felt there was nothing wrong with how the Yu family handled things.
Yu’s father had remarried. His later success was largely thanks to his second wife’s family. Naturally, it made sense for him to leave his estate to the children from that marriage.
If he had skipped over Yu Qing and left everything to the adopted son Yu Yang, that would have been truly abnormal. It would have aroused suspicion from his wife and her family—and Yu Yang’s true identity would likely have been exposed.
And once exposed, the peaceful life they had would be shattered.
From Yu Yang’s perspective, the arrangement might feel somewhat cold. But what choice did his father have? His first wife came from an ordinary background, and his success only came after marrying his current wife.
Leaving the inheritance to the children of his second marriage was perfectly reasonable.
If anything, bypassing Yu Qing to favor Yu Yang would have been unfair to both Yu Qing and his current wife.
Moreover, he found Yu Yang, raised him, taught him how to stand on his own, and pushed him to the position of an idol superstar—that alone could already be considered fulfilling his responsibility.
If he had never remarried, then he, Yu Yang, and his first wife would likely have remained just an ordinary family of three.
