After leaving the forty-second floor, everything changed.
Not suddenly.
Not dramatically.
But steadily enough for all of them to notice.
The Tower stopped feeling like a place meant to be conquered.
It started feeling like a place meant to prepare them.
The forty-third floor was unlike anything below.
There were monsters.
There were dangers.
There were tests.
Yet everything felt purposeful.
As though the Tower was no longer trying to stop them.
As though it was evaluating them.
Watching them.
Measuring them.
Kael never said those thoughts aloud.
But they remained in the back of her mind.
The crystal sphere rested safely inside her bag.
Six completed fragments glowed softly within it.
The final piece still waited somewhere above.
And with every floor they climbed, the sphere grew warmer.
The forty-third floor tested cooperation.
The forty-fourth tested judgment.
The forty-fifth tested endurance.
Not once did the floors feel impossible.
They were difficult.
Very difficult.
But not impossible.
Months ago Team Snail would have died here.
Without question.
Now they survived.
Adapted.
Improved.
And climbed.
The changes in the team became obvious.
Aerin had become a warrior capable of standing against monsters that once would have terrified entire climbing parties.
His movements were confident.
His strikes precise.
His protective nature remained unchanged.
Whenever danger appeared, he instinctively moved between it and his teammates.
Mira often complained about it.
“You know I can fight too.”
“I know.”
“Then stop treating me like I’m twelve.”
“You are twelve.”
“I hate you.”
“You don’t.”
“…I don’t.”
The argument repeated often enough that even Kael occasionally anticipated it.
Mira herself had transformed dramatically.
The sharp-tongued orphan who once relied mostly on speed had become an exceptional healer.
Her skills had matured.
Her knowledge of herbs surpassed most professional healers.
More importantly—
She had learned patience.
Well.
Some patience.
A little.
Enough that Aerin considered it progress.
Kael remained difficult to describe.
She wasn’t the strongest.
Not physically.
She wasn’t the fastest.
Not even close.
Yet nobody questioned her leadership anymore.
Because every floor proved the same thing.
She noticed what others missed.
Patterns.
Changes.
Details.
Possibilities.
And somehow—
The Tower itself continued treating her differently.
Not enough for others to understand.
But enough for her to notice.
Sometimes pathways revealed themselves only after she looked at them.
Sometimes symbols glowed faintly beneath her fingertips.
Sometimes monsters ignored openings they should have taken.
And sometimes…
The Tower simply felt aware of her presence.
Kael still didn’t understand it.
And that bothered her more than she admitted.
The forty-sixth floor brought another surprise.
They found the final shard.
Not hidden.
Not guarded.
Waiting.
Just like the sixth shard.
This time it rested atop a stone altar overlooking an endless sea of clouds.
The moment Kael approached, the final piece rose into the air.
The crystal sphere left her hands.
Floating.
Rotating.
Glowing.
The final shard merged.
Light exploded across the sky.
For several seconds nobody could see anything.
Then the brilliance faded.
And the crystal sphere was complete.
Whole.
Perfect.
The cracks were gone.
The missing pieces restored.
Streams of golden light moved beneath its transparent surface.
Almost like living stars.
Everyone stared.
Even the mysterious man.
Especially the mysterious man.
For the first time since joining Team Snail, genuine emotion crossed his face.
Recognition.
Kael noticed.
Of course she did.
But before she could ask anything, the sphere projected something into the air.
A map.
Not of a floor.
Not of the Tower.
A path.
A glowing path leading directly upward.
Toward the fiftieth floor.
Toward the summit.
Toward the truth.
Nobody spoke for several moments.
Then Mira whispered,
“So we’re really doing this.”
Aerin smiled.
“We’ve been doing this for months.”
“No.”
Mira shook her head.
“I mean the top.”
Silence followed.
Because they all understood.
The top.
The place nobody had reached.
The place nobody understood.
The place where every mystery waited.
Including Riven.
The following floors passed in a blur of battles and discoveries.
Forty-seven.
Forty-eight.
Forty-nine.
Each floor pushed them further.
Yet Team Snail kept moving.
Together.
Always together.
By now they no longer resembled the small group that had entered the Tower months ago.
The frightened merchant.
The struggling boy.
The sharp-tongued orphan.
Those people still existed.
But they had grown.
The climb had changed them.
And perhaps that had been the point all along.
Finally, after nearly a year inside the Tower—
They stood before the final gate.
The entrance to the fiftieth floor.
The gate was enormous.
Ancient.
Beautiful.
Countless symbols covered its surface.
When Kael approached, every symbol illuminated.
One after another.
As though recognizing her.
The same unsettling feeling returned.
Recognition.
Welcome.
Home.
Kael frowned immediately.
Home?
Before she could think further, the complete crystal sphere floated from her bag.
The gate slowly opened.
A warm wind emerged from beyond.
Not threatening.
Not dangerous.
Inviting.
The mysterious man quietly looked at the opening.
Then at Kael.
For the first time, his calm expression cracked.
A strange sadness appeared in his eyes.
And something else.
Relief.
“You’ve finally reached it.”
He said softly.
Kael looked at him.
“What do you mean?”
The man smiled.
A small smile.
A familiar smile.
Too familiar.
And for the first time since meeting him—
Kael felt something she hadn’t felt before.
A suspicion.
A terrifying possibility.
The mysterious man simply turned toward the gate.
And stepped forward.
Toward the final floor.
Toward the last secret.
Toward the truth that had been waiting for them from the very beginning.
