The moment their feet crossed into the clearing, the world shifted.
Not violently. Not with sound or force. It was quiet—too quiet. The kind of quiet that didn’t belong in the Tower, where even the air usually carried tension. Here, it felt… empty.
Aerin turned instinctively, checking behind them.
The path they had taken was gone.
“…Okay,” he said under his breath, trying to keep his voice steady. “That’s new.”
Mira’s fingers tightened slightly around her weapon. “We’re not going back that way, are we?”
Kael didn’t answer immediately.
Because she was watching.
Not the ground. Not the surroundings.
Something else.

The clearing no longer looked the same.
It had stretched. Expanded in a way that didn’t make sense. What had seemed like a small open area was now wide enough that the edges were barely visible. The air felt heavier—not suffocating, but pressing, like something was leaning too close.
Then—
A voice.
Not loud.
Not even clear.
But present.

“Proceed.”

Mira flinched slightly. “Did you hear that?”
“Yes,” Aerin replied, his tone lower now.
Kael didn’t react outwardly, but her eyes sharpened.

Nothing appeared.
No creature.
No structure.
No obvious path forward.

Aerin took a cautious step ahead.
The ground didn’t change.
Nothing attacked.
But something felt… wrong.

“What are we supposed to do?” Mira asked, her voice quieter now.
Kael stepped forward as well, slower, more deliberate. “Observe first.”
“For what?” Mira snapped lightly, the tension getting to her. “There’s nothing here.”
“That’s the point,” Kael replied.
But even she wasn’t certain.

They moved deeper into the clearing.
A few steps.

Still nothing.

Aerin stopped again.

“…Wait.”

This time, his voice was different.

Mira turned to him. “What now?”
He didn’t answer immediately.
Because his expression had changed.

Confusion.
Then hesitation.

“I… think I’ve been here before,” he said slowly.
Mira frowned. “What?”
“That rock,” he pointed slightly ahead. “I’ve seen it. Earlier.”
“That doesn’t make sense,” she replied immediately. “We just got here.”
Aerin shook his head, his brows furrowing. “No… I mean—before. Somewhere else.”

Kael watched him closely.
Then looked around again.
Carefully this time.

The terrain hadn’t changed.
But the feeling had.

They kept walking.
And within minutes—
Mira stopped.

“No.”

Aerin turned to her. “What?”
She pointed in another direction. “That tree. I passed it already.”
“That’s impossible,” he said.
“I know what I saw,” she snapped.

Kael exhaled slowly.
Then spoke, quieter than before.
“We’re not moving forward.”

Both of them looked at her.

“We’re circling,” she continued.

Silence followed.

Aerin turned, scanning the area again, his expression tightening. “But we’re not turning. We’ve been walking straight.”
“Not physically,” Kael said.
Mira’s eyes narrowed. “Then how?”

Kael didn’t answer immediately.
Because she was feeling it now.

Not in the ground.
Not in the air.

In her thoughts.

A subtle pull.
A shift.
Something redirecting them—not their bodies, but their perception.

“This isn’t a physical test,” she said finally.
Mira let out a breath. “No kidding.”

Kael shook her head slightly. “No. I mean… it’s not about where we walk.”
Aerin frowned. “Then what is it about?”

Kael looked ahead.
But for a brief moment—
Her gaze lost focus.

Then she blinked.
And it returned.

“…What we believe is happening,” she said slowly.

Mira stared at her. “That doesn’t help.”
“It does,” Kael replied, though her tone wasn’t as certain as usual. “We’re reacting to it like it’s real.”
Aerin hesitated. “And it’s not?”

Kael didn’t answer that.

Instead, she stepped forward again.

She walked.

Not trying to track movement.

Just walking.

At first, nothing changed.

She stepped through it.

Was gone.

Kael stood alone in a smaller space now, the air lighter, the tension gone.

Walking.
Circling.

“…So that’s how it works,” she muttered quietly.

She didn’t go back.
Didn’t call out.

Because she knew—
They had to do it themselves.

Minutes passed.

Aerin stopped first.
He closed his eyes briefly, his grip loosening around his weapon.
“…This isn’t real,” he said under his breath.
Then he stepped forward—
Without checking.
Without turning.

And just like that—
He disappeared from the clearing.

Mira lasted longer.
Not because she couldn’t figure it out.
But because she fought it.

“This is stupid,” she muttered, pacing slightly. “There has to be a trick—”
She stopped mid-sentence.
Her expression shifted.

“…No.”

She exhaled sharply, her shoulders relaxing just slightly.
“Fine,” she said. “Have it your way.”

Then she stepped forward.

And vanished.

They appeared together again.

A narrow passage this time.
Stone walls.
A single path ahead.

Aerin let out a breath. “That was… annoying.”
Mira scoffed lightly. “Annoying? I almost lost my mind in there.”
Kael glanced at them briefly. “You didn’t.”
Mira crossed her arms. “Felt like it.”

Aerin looked at Kael. “You got out first.”
She nodded once.
“How?” he asked.

Kael paused.
Just for a second.

Then said, “I stopped trying to solve it.”

It wasn’t the full truth.
But it was enough.

Mira sighed. “I hate floors like this.”
Aerin smiled faintly. “Better than getting hit by something the size of a mountain.”
“That’s debatable,” she replied.

Kael turned toward the path ahead.

The pressure was gone.
The test was over.

“Let’s move,” she said.

And this time—
The way forward was real.

They stepped ahead together.
